Summary

The second Dirk Gently book by Douglas Adams, The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul is a witty detective story perfect for fans of his phenomenally successful The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. This new audio edition is hilariously narrated by Stephen Mangan - star of Green Wing, Episodes, and the original Dirk Gently series on the BBC.

When a passenger check-in desk at Terminal Two, Heathrow Airport, shot up through the roof engulfed in a ball of orange flame, the usual people tried to claim responsibility. First the IRA, then the PLO and the Gas Board. Even British Nuclear Fuels rushed out a statement to the effect that the situation was completely under control, that it was a one-in-a-million chance, that there was hardly any radioactive leakage at all and that the site of the explosion would make a nice location for a day out with the kids and a picnic, before finally having to admit that it wasn't actually anything to do with them at all.

No rational cause could be found for the explosion - it was simply designated an act of God. But, thinks Dirk Gently, which God? And why? What God would be hanging around Terminal Two of Heathrow Airport trying to catch the 15:37 to Oslo?

Continue this surreal series with the unfinished The Salmon of Doubt.

A Joy From Start to Finish

I've been a lifelong fan of Douglas Adams. I don't normally write reviews but feel I need to address some comments made by other reviewers regarding the narration, in case they are dissuaded from purchasing this audiobook from some ill-judged remarks. I thought that Stephen Mangan did a superlative job, as he always does. His delivery was thoroughly engaging and the voices he used for the different characters were excellent. I feel certain that Douglas Adams himself would have approved.

I listened to this over a few days of road trips and didn't want it to end. A truly wonderful story from a master storyteller.

Confusing but Entertaining.

There is much crossover of mythology and modern day, which adds to the very involved narrative.

Wonderful

This was a joy to listen to, despite having read the book many years ago.

If you've never read or listened to a Dirk Gently, this is the one to begin with.

wonderful follow up

I'm a big Douglas Adams fan, and have read this book, listened to the radio adaptation and now this very well narrated audio book edition.
It's a good easy listen which I highly recommend to any fan of Adams or quirky humour.

A strange ending to a good read

I really enjoyed listening to the series, Stephen Mangan really brought to life. You could really see the imagery of what he explains in your mind while listening, I would recommend this to my friends, the only thing that I didn’t really like about this was the ending that should’ve been a bit more thought Into how it was written.

Wonderful in all except one tiny, irritating way

I don't know if Mr Mangan has ever been any further north than Luton, but any true Northerner will be annoyed by the constant mispronunciation of 'oh ah' towards the end. It's not two short, staccato syllables punctuated by a momentary pause - "oh-ah" - it's one continuous pronunciation with the ah running on for several beats - "oh aaaaaaaahhhhhhh"! It wouldn't be too bad if it's just once, but ir apoears dozens of times!

Reminder of the genius of Douglas Adams

The man was a genius, and this book is a very fine work.

So many reminders of London in the 1980s; and so many ideas which cropped up in other authors works (a portal to a great hall at King’s Cross station? Norse gods living amongst us? Zen navigation?)

Highly recommended.

Delicious !

A delicious serve of Douglas Adams energy, wit and imagination read by the very gifted Stephen Mangan.
Don't try to make sense of the characters or plot...just let yourself enjoy the dry humour and beauty of words.
Stephen Mangan is wonderful at interpreting the mood and flavour of the characters making them real .
