About this listen

Caithleen and Baba, first encountered in The Country Girls, are now living in Dublin, where they discuss men, drink gin, and try to look fast. Cait, in the pursuit of true love, becomes involved with the fanatically domineering Eugene Gaillard. Painful disillusion and occasional moments of bliss in her life make this a bittersweet tale, and it is told with all the perception and wit that is the hallmark of Edna O’Brien.

Having listened to The Country Girls I had to continue the series with this one, and again went with the version read by the author. She has a very flat, droll way of speaking which I quite like. After the first part of the trilogy, I felt a real sadness for the characters, and even more so in this one as they are young women trying to find their way in the world. I’m in equal parts looking forward to and dreading to find out how it ends.

Engaging story read by the author

Wonderful but heart breaking,
on to the third one now! Hope she finds happiness but does E o B do happy endings?

The detail is exquisite

Bought after loving Country Girls. Another great one, with some quotes to stop you in your tracks. I have seen a few reviews criticising the author as narrator, but I loved her. Her pacing suited the style, and who better to know the meaning of the work?

I love this book which is my favourite of the trilogy and have read it many times. The author really brings Ireland to life and the characters of Baba and Kathleen.
