Story
He was framed for murder. Now he needs someone on the outside to save him. For 22 years Quincy Miller has sat on Death Row without friends, family or legal representation. He was accused of killing Keith Russo, a lawyer in a small Florida town. But there were no witnesses and no motive. Just the fact that Quincy was black in an all-white town and that a blood-splattered torch was found in the boot of his car. A torch he swore was planted. A torch that conveniently disappeared from evidence just before his trial.

Story
Number-one best-seller John Grisham returns with his most suspenseful thriller yet. Given the importance of what they do, and the controversies that often surround them, and the violent people they sometimes confront, it is remarkable that in the history of the USA only four active federal judges have been murdered. Judge Raymond Fawcett just became number five. I did not know Judge Fawcett, but I know who killed him, and why. I am a lawyer, and I am in prison. It's a long story.

Story
Troy Phelan is a self-made billionaire, one of the richest men in the United States. He is also eccentric, reclusive, confined to a wheelchair, and looking for a way to die. His heirs, to no one's surprise - especially Troy's - are circling like vultures. Nate O'Riley is a high-octane Washington litigator who's lived too hard, too fast, for too long. His second marriage is a shambles, and he is emerging from his fourth stay in rehab armed with little more than his fragile sobriety, good intentions, and resilient sense of humour.

Michael was in a hurry. He was scrambling up the ladder at Drake & Sweeney, a giant D.C. law firm with 800 lawyers. The money was good and getting better; a partnership was three years away. He was a rising star with no time to waste, no time to stop, no time to toss a few coins into the cups of panhandlers. No time for a conscience. But a violent encounter with a homeless man stopped him cold. Michael survived; his assailant did not. Who was this man?

Story
Pete Banning was Clanton's favourite son, a returning war hero, the patriarch of a prominent family, a farmer, father, neighbour and a faithful member of the Methodist Church. Then one cool October morning in 1946, he rose early, drove into town, walked into the church, and calmly shot and killed the Reverend Dexter Bell. As if the murder wasn't shocking enough, it was even more baffling that Pete's only statement about it - to the sheriff, to his defense attorney, to the judge, to his family and friends and to the people of Clanton - was 'I have nothing to say'.

The hill people and the Mexicans arrived on the same day. It was a Wednesday, early in September, 1952. The Cardinals were five games behind the Dodgers with three weeks to go, and the season looked hopeless. The cotton, however, was waist-high to my father, over my head, and he and my grandfather could be heard before supper whispering words that were seldom heard. It could be a "good crop". Thus begins the new novel from John Grisham, a story inspired by his own childhood in rural Arkansas.

The Rogue Lawyer
- By mgemelia on 04-01-16
Summary
The classic legal thriller and huge bestseller from master of the genre John Grisham.
David Zinc has it all: Big firm, big salary, life in the lawyer's fast lane.
Until the day he snaps and throws it all away.
Leaving the world of corporate law far behind, he talks himself into a new job with Finley & Figg. A self-styled 'boutique' firm with only two partners, Oscar Finley and Wally Figg are ambulance-chasing street lawyers who hustle nickel-and-dime cases, dreaming of landing the big win.
For all his Harvard Law Degree and five years with Chicago's top firm, Zinc has never entered a courtroom, never helped a client who really needed a lawyer, never handled a gun.
All that is about to change.

An absolute delight
I had not previously read any Grisham books but was so inspired by the enthusiasm shown by participants on Radio 4's "A good read" to this particular title that I decided it was time to take a look. But instead went for the audible format (great whilst driving or walking the dogs).
You will immediately warm to this set of shambolic characters - and you will enjoy every minute of the story - which is exceptionally well read. Can thoroughly recommend. Have now just listened to my 2nd Grisham audible - that was great too...

endearing and gripping
This is unusually for Grisham, a heartwarming story. But still as gripping with unexpected twists and turns as you would expect from such a story spinner. The reading is also well done and makes the complicated legal terms easy on the ear.

A legal roller-coaster
I'm a fan of Grisham's legal thrillers and I really enjoyed this one as I couldn't predict the twists and turns there would be next as an ill-assorted threesome of lawyers take on a big pharmaceutical company with bottomless wallets. It's real David and Goliath tussle with many humourous interludes interleaved with the author's hall-mark taughtly written court-room scenes. There's a strong cast of memorable characters and I was sorry when the book ended.

Street lawyers have never been so much fun
Grisham maintains his normal high standards in this frolic through the, sometimes seedy, world of the street lawyer, painting an interesting picture of the willingness to bend ethics standards in order to chase the dream of money, apllying these standards liberally, if not equally, to all levels of the profession.
My only real criticism is the reader's continued, somewhat grating, pronunciation of certain words.

OK But Not Grisham's Best
The novel starts out with a different twist and grabs your attention. Unfortunately not all that far into it the story starts to take on the direction of The King of Torts with a subplot in the background leaning to The Rainmaker. The Litigators is at best an OK, strictly entertainment read. Much of the time you find yourself despising the majority of characters, thank goodness there's a couple of lawyers with a conscience thrown in to keep you from becoming totally cynical on the legal profession. This will never rate of there with some of John Grisham's top works, it does not get you thinking and anticipating the outcome like A Time to Kill, The Chamber or The Confession. If you're a John Grisham fan you'll find it to be an OK read, if you're not a John Grisham fan you might find yourself thinking it was a waste of your time.
John Grisham is a very good writer and this is a fun read with interesting characters but just not the best book Grisham has written.

Worth it in the end
Grisham usually develops his story line and characters very thoroughly and grips the reader in a problem -- usually a David and Goliath -- that needs to be resolved.
The Litigators was less compelling and engaging with regard to both these aspects. However, it was definitely worth persevering with because the resolution was, as usual, satisfying and clever. The reader, Dennis Boutsikaris, although professional, had a drawl and flat tone that contributed to a book that I felt largely lacked Grisham's usual vibrancy and energy.

A slow starter gained pace finished in a hurry
I've been disappointed in John Grisham's later novels but managed to stay with this one to the end. He goes into great detail in bulding his unattractive characters and the lengths they go to to cling onto the coat tails of the big firms, but somehow he scrapes in towards the end.
It was an eye opener to the world of 'ambulance chasers' who have created a monster in the legal system causing bona fide companies and professionals much angst as they are led to the slaughter of their expertise and characters for megabucks by these unsavoury lawyers. That said, it was a good yarn.

Perfect
Best Grisham book in my opinion. Very easy to listen too with several key themes crossing over each other neatly, all linked by our hero Davis Zink. More light hearted humour than previous books which I enjoyed. I actually found myself laughing out loud at some of ‘Wally’s’ antics. Also a perfect ending. Loved it.

Got better as it went along.
What made the experience of listening to The Litigators the most enjoyable?
Not knowing where the story was going, which was a nice change
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Litigators?
finding the toy responsible for making the boy sick
Which character – as performed by Dennis Boutsikaris – was your favorite?
I can't remember her name but the 96 year old in the bar that David Zinc drinks with.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
A David and Goliath tale with a twist, you don't always have to win to win.

Fairly dry.
I expected a little bit more action from this, especially after the beginning, which was intriguing. Got lost in the middle with all the paperwork, but listened to the end just to find out what happened. All in all, a fairly flat book, both in terms of the content and the performance.
