Summary

Bloomsbury presents The Leviathan by Rosie Andrews, read by Rupert Farley.

A beguiling tale of superstition, myth and murder, perfect for fans of The Binding, The Essex Serpent and Once upon a River.

She is awake....

Norfolk, 1643. With civil war tearing England apart, reluctant soldier Thomas Treadwater is summoned home by his sister, who accuses a new servant of improper conduct with their widowed father. By the time Thomas returns home, his father is insensible, felled by a stroke, and their new servant is in prison, facing charges of witchcraft.

Thomas prides himself on being a rational, modern man, but as he unravels the mystery of what has happened, he uncovers not a tale of superstition but something dark and ancient, linked to a shipwreck years before.

Something has awoken, and now it will not rest.

Richly researched, incredibly atmospheric and deliciously unsettling, The Leviathan is set in England during a time of political and religious turbulence. It is a tale of family and loyalty, superstition and sacrifice, but most of all it is a spellbinding mystery and a story of impossible things.

"It’s hard to believe that such an accomplished novel could be a debut - The Leviathan is a gloriously dark story that sweeps you along to its harrowing yet satisfying conclusion. Superb." (Susan Stokes-Chapman, author of Pandora)

"Infused with creepy gothic dread and gorgeously written. Fantastic." (Amy McCulloch, author of Breathless)

Jumps the shark (not quite literally)

I love the atmosphere and scene setting of this book, feels really like the 17th century came to life. The characterisation is great, even the Norfolk accent is good (Happisburgh aside). It all gets a bit daft towards the end though, the last third feel interminable. Just when you think things are wrapping up - off we go again. Like so many books these days it could really have done with a good edit.

Transport yourself to another time, another place.

Never have I ever in all of my nearly 2000 audible books, have I loved a book so much that I am writing this review only half way through.

This is the first time I have come upon this author and I am eager to find more in the hope of unearthing another truly mesmeric story. Told most beautifully by an equally magical narrator, both story and story teller creating the perfect marriage to produce a tale so beguiling.

Get ready to transport to another time and place, where you can feel cold from the snow and smell the scent from the streets. prepare yourself for chills of a different nature as the story progresses and the fear of things unknown and unknowable begin to make themselves known.

At the roughly half way mark I am at once, eager to progress to find out where the story will lead and what will happen to our protagonist who is hard not to love, but also I don't want it to end.

I will add an update when I have finished the book, but as for now, don't waste another minute without this little treasure in your life. it's a credit well worth it xx

Fresh and engaging historical thriller

It took a little bit of time for me to feel engaged with the story but it was definitely worth it. This is a clever and engaging story about superstition and witchcraft with some well paced twists you'll deliberately see coming before the narrator and some sudden ones you won't. It feels very well researched even though real historical events are only on the periphery. Some people may call it a horror novel, but I'd argue it's more of a supernatural thriller.

Nearly stopped listening half way for it to pick up

The start of the book is slow, with a predictability of events and who is responsible for them. However half way through the book takes a more interesting turn and instead you are pulled into the plot more partly due to sympathy for Henry. The rest of the characters could have held more intrigue but the second half was far more engaging and worth reading.

Well, I never!!

..enjoyed an Audible listen quite so much as this!
What a brilliantly conceived and written piece of work by Rosie Andrews,
thrillingly and flawlessly rendered by Rupert Farley.
You'll have read the summary so suffice it to say I have rarely been more genuinely terrified and intrigued by a book.

Suspenseful and atmospheric

This had me riveted from the start. The author’s skill at creating such a tale of suspense, atmosphere and a spine-tingling narrative is truly awesome. The weight and depth of the writing is enthralling. The narration was superb, I highly recommend this.
