Summary

The Legend of Drizzt: The Collected Stories expands upon the epic legend of the dark elf with 12 tales performed by the all-star cast of Felicia Day, Dan Harmon, Greg Grunberg, Tom Felton, Danny Pudi, Sean Astin, Melissa Rauch, Ice-T, Wil Wheaton, Al Yankovic, Michael Chiklis, and David Duchovny!

For years, the Legend of Drizzt has included short stories published in Forgotten Realms anthologies and Dragon magazine. Available here for the first time in audio are all the classic stories by the New York Times best-selling author R. A. Salvatore!

From the startling origin of Drizzt’s panther companion, to the tale of Jarlaxle and Entreri’s first encounter with the dragon sisters, the tales in The Collected Stories enrich this vividly-imagined series by building the world around Drizzt through exploring the backstories of side characters and magical locations.

Critic reviews

"The narrators, all good actors, dramatize the unusual characters with clarity and deliver natural-sounding dialogue. Their even pacing helps listeners track tricky plot twists as the stories build.... Fans of Salvatore's work will be enthralled." ( AudioFile)

Not Bad... Overall

What did you like best about this story?

It isn't just one story... it is a short story anthology. I liked hearing about different characters who have appeared in the novels of the Legend of Drizzt. Wil Wheaton was an especially engaging narrator.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

The lack of enthusiasm from certain narrators: Ice-T and David Duchovny (sp.?), I'm sorry to say lacked feeling and affected my ability to connect with their respective stories.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

A couple of the narrators made me groan in frustration at their lack of feeling. See the previous question

Mixed performances, disconnected stories

Cast performance varies with Dan Harmon and Al Jankovic being stand outs and Ice T unfortunately being a low point (elvish names do not come naturally to him, and a pretty philosophical story does not fit his narrative voice). Similarly, the interest of the stories varies for me as someone not intimately aware of the history of the legend of Drizzt but still fairly engaging throughout

A reasonable collection of short stories

This is a reasonable collection of short stories, some better than others and with mixed levels of narration.

The changes in pace for the stories and narration made it less than ideal for me.

Legend of Drizzt. So, so.

OK, so from the off, I'm a fan of fantasy fiction, D&D, Drizzt and the Forgotten Realms. I enjoy a good audio book, but this is very mixed. Some of the All Star cast are really very poor narrators. Some of the stories are cliché ridden digressions and many don't even mention Drizzt. To be honest some of the narrators were so poor I skipped their stories after listening with my teeth on edge. I even considered returning the purchase.
And who does not know the W in sword is silent? sigh.

Great stuff

Great group of narrators bringing to life a fantastic selection of stories, Drizzt is as compelling as ever as is wulfgar, highly recommended to fans of drizzt and newcomers alike

Too many VAs spoil the audiobook.

Summary-
This audiobook was not what I thought, I thought one narrator many characters voices.

whilst I love every one of the voice actors that have joined here, I have been constantly listening to Victor bevine's reading of the stories of drizz't and have gotten used to the voices and accents being used for main characters.

it's very jarring to hear bruener battlehammer - a dwarf (which I originally thought would sound Scottish when reading the crystal shard series) changed from almost Irish sounding with victors performance to cockney with Felicia Day's (who is fantastic in her work don't get me wrong). Let alone the gruffness not being carried due to the vocal pitch of Ms Day (which is understandable due to biology).

I really wanted to enjoy this series.of stories, and probably will when reading it rather than listening. But I really couldn't stretch my imagination enough to have the characters voices being polar opposite to what I had in my mind or previously listened to.

I think if anyone was to revisit this audio performance, it should definitely be done in a way which a set characters is voiced by one the actors enlisted - almost like a radio drama.

But hey that's just a theory...a boo.... wait sorry wrong place...

In all seriousness though, these are fantastic actors and if the different voices as narrators, different accents for the same characters and different styles of reading the same story setting doesn't bother you. Then definitely give it a try, I picked it up in a sale and should have listened to the sample given...

Well worth the listen

Exceptional performances by Felicia Day and Will Wheaton. Not so much from David Duchovney and Ice-T but persisted through them. I failed to understand how some of the stories related to Drizzt, especially the one with the Lich and the dragons. Last story about Wulfgar raised too many questions and wondering if I've missed a story somewhere.

Excellent collection of stories

I’d never heard of Drizzt before picking up this book and what a wonderful introduction it has been.
I was caught by surprise by the narrators and entertained throughout. Would recommend highly as a starting point for anyone interested in Dungeons & Dragons fiction, Salvatore is a great writer.

Excellent bridge book!

The book filled in a few gaps for me that before were only events that had been mentioned but without much elaboration. The author drops little golden nuggets throughout the drizdt series and it was nice for some of those events to be written and compiled.

fun intro to the world

I've lived and played D&D for many years but somehow never got into any of the novels. After hearing about the cast of people reading the short stories I was sold. All the stories were great and make me want to know more about this world. The only downside was Ice Tea's performance. It would have been fun to have him read one of the shorter chapters but I can't even tell you what his story was about because I just couldn't listen to it.

Wish a couple of the narrators were better

Would you listen to The Legend of Drizzt: The Collected Stories again? Why?

The stories, typical of R.A. Salvatore, were excellent. He has long been one of my favorite writers of fantasy. However, a couple of the narrators were less than stellar, and were a disappointment. Ice-T, and his pretentious insistence on pronouncing the 'w' in 'sword' was the low point for me. In a couple of the action sequences, when he got more excited, he actually pronounced the word correctly, revealing the mispronunciation was an affectation. The highlights of the narration, for me, were Felicia Hardy, Tom Felton, Will Wheaton, and Sean Astin. David Duchovny was the other letdown.

I will listen to the audio book again, but will likely avoid the chapter read by Ice-T. This is a shame, as that chapter has arguably the best Drizzt battle sequences.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Legend of Drizzt: The Collected Stories?

I really enjoyed finding out more of the backstory on Guenhwyvar. Tom Felton did an excellent job narrating.

Will Wheaton, please read all my books to me.

Will Wheaton was awesome, I wish he had read every story in the audiobook. Bravo.

I won't name names but, if this particular reader was perhaps an Iced Tea that i bought from the convenience store of audio beverages i would return it for tasting monotone and generally lack luster.

A Great Listen , mostly

The stories are great. I enjoyed them from start to finish. Most of the narrators are also great. A couple don't really perform as well as the others. I'm not sure if it's because the stories settings don't match with the style of their performance, or if they didn't try as hard as the others.

Notably Ice T's performance doesn't seem to match the story he reads.

Short stories that are all unique and exciting

it's a bunch of short stories that are interesting and exciting. I've never heard anything like this before. I'm very impressed by the talent of the narrators and I'm going to buy the rest of the series now.

Enjoyable listen

Ice-T's narration was a bit rough, but otherwise an enjoyable listen.

I haven't read any Salvatore in quite a while. Listening to these tales was like reuniting with old friends. If you enjoy any of his other work, you'll enjoy these stories.

Very entertaining

It was extremely well written and performed by the various actors amazingly. However, very little directly told of Drizzt or really had anything to do directly with him.

A good entry to the fiction of D&D.

Too many narrators spoiled the book

Couldn't even power through it and I loved reading this as a kid. This is one that is better to read.
