About this listen

A laugh-out-loud romantic comedy from Katy Birchall, author of The Secret Bridesmaid and The Wedding Season.

Harper Jenkins has her dream job. As Celebrity Editor at a glossy weekend magazine, she's known for persuading tight-lipped Hollywood stars to open up, landing her exclusive stories and a great reputation. Everything's perfect - that is, until her awful boss hires hotshot reporter Ryan as the new Features Editor.

Harper is furious: she remembers Ryan from a decade ago, when they were both interns together. Harper had mistakenly thought Ryan was someone she could trust - until he betrayed her in the worst way possible. They've never spoken since.

Now, thrown together in a busy newsroom, their dynamic is a disaster from the start. They don't agree on anything and bicker constantly - Ryan can't bear how chaotic and messy Harper is; Harper finds Ryan's condescending nature infuriating. They clash over who's writing what article, and fight over who's going to which event.

Forced to spend more time together on a press trip abroad, Harper is surprised to find she may have misjudged Ryan. But can she put their history behind them - or will they both insist on having the last word?

Honestly I choose books by searching for Karen as a narrator first. This book was a great find. Lovely characters and as always beautiful read

Great story and love Karen

I don’t like being negative so I’ll try and be as fair as possible.
This book had so much potential in it to be really really good. The characters are believable and have real depth. You can believe that their life experiences might have led them to act the way they do and their personalities feel real. Some aspects of the story line were really well written, and I couldn’t always predict what was going to happen next.
That said, there’s a lot of stuff in this book that just doesn’t need to be said. There’s a conversation (admittedly a short one) about the main character writing up an article from a famous actor. I was sure she was going to forget to finish it or send it or something because why else would it need to go in? But no, no impact on the story line. There’s a lot of that. Sometimes, it felt like a word count was trying to be reached.
I like this particular trope of enemies to lovers, personally, and it was done pretty well, though it’s obvious most of the way through that the male love interest isn’t as invested in the ‘enemies’ thing as the main character is.
I might have enjoyed this book more if I were reading it rather than listening to it, or if it were in the hands of a different narrator. Personally, Karen Cass doesn’t do it for me. I don’t love her narration style. Every character sounds too optimistic at all times, and she always reads with the same inflections, in my opinion. However, I know plenty of people who love her, and I couldn’t do a better job if I tried. Also her Swedish accent was probably the best bit of narration in the whole book for me.
It’s a bit slow in places and over-explained in others. Listen at 1.1 speed minimum (I missed absolutely nothing at x1.15 and it sounded like the actual pace people speak at). I honestly liked it overall, but I wasn’t eager to get to the end. It’s a very easy, predictable listen.

Had a lot of potential

Headline sums it up. Just another romantic comedy, this time a hate to love scenario.

Had brief moments of cute especially when the leads first meet but from there it was pretty average. Not a bad listen by any means but not something I would recommend.

It's only o.k.
