Critic reviews

‘Engrossing’
‘Popular historical fiction at its finest, immaculately researched and superbly told’
"Expect high demand for another outstanding entry in Gregory’s ongoing and best-selling Tudor saga."
"All bow down before the queen of historical fiction."
"Gregory’s first-person perspective on late Tudor England’s turbulent history will delight existing and future fans."
"True to her style, Philippa Gregory weaves a story that draws readers in and tugs at the heart, featuring characters who defy everyone’s expectations. She clearly loves the Tudor court; every detail is pristine, and the drama is spot on. The sadness is followed by immense happiness, but in the midst of high drama, Gregory doesn’t let you down. She delivers every emotion so subtly that you’ll be crying even before the intensity of the scene hits you. Gregory is at her best in THE LAST TUDOR, a must-read for historical fiction enthusiasts and certainly for her countless fans.”
"Immaculate research, pacy narratives, and a stubborn insistence that history is not only about men....a powerful reminder of how precarious the lives of Tudor women could be."

Fascinating story, the narrator was perfect, really takes the listener into the period. One of the best audiobooks I’ve ever listened to.

I have been listening to this title for a short while. I am, in fact, only up to Chapter 12, but I am becoming increasingly irritated by the fact that, at the start of each Chapter (and possibly, sometimes, paragraph or section) the first word is missing. It may be "I" or "The", or some other equally short word, and so it does not interfere with the plot or my enjoyment of the story, but it is just so annoying that I am almost listening for the next omission.

This is not the first title about which I have noticed this problem. I cannot believe that my Kindle Fire is at fault, as the recordings are out of my control and transmission to the device is directly from Audible. I wonder if Audible could look into and correct this anomaly; not just in this title but in others which may suffer from the same abnormality in recording.

Having reported the above, I must add that I am enjoying the story, the reading and the listening, and I hope this will continue as I proceed through this moving and compelling piece of history.

A small criticism

Interesting perspective for a book, I really enjoyed how it developed through a family starting with the eldest sibling and progressing to to youngest and provided insight into the lives of people in this time.

Fantastic book!

Well what a fascinating story. It gets off to a slow start with Jane’s constant talk of religion becoming quite repetitive at times, however it does put into perspective what a massive part religion played in daily life. Catherine and Mary's story are really enjoyable and definitely give you a sense of what went on in the court of Elizabeth I. Overall I’d give this book four stars just because it is so difficult to get into. Stick with it and you won’t be disappointed.

An enjoyable listen ..... once you get going

It is just the thing to listen to on a cold winter afternoon especially if you like historical novels.

This is an excellent audio book about the little-known sisters of Lady Jane Gray.
