Summary

On the night that Carla Reid plans on celebrating her wedding anniversary with her husband Kevin and their grown son Jack, their New Zealand farmstead has never felt more like home. But when Ben Toroa and another aspiring gang member brutally force their way into the house with robbery and more on their minds, the night and the rest of both their lives take a radically different direction.

As Carla struggles to come to terms with the aftermath and bereavement of different kinds and Ben faces the consequences in prison, their stories will be forever entwined.

Maori pronunciation

The story was gripping and moved forward dramatically. Carla is a compelling character and very likeable but couldn’t a New Zealand actress be found to pronounce Te Reo Maori correctly to make the audiobook five star?
It took me sometime to realise “pay key ha” was actually “pakeha”, or white person. Fiona Sussman must be furious.

Pretty tough read here

Recommend this New Zealand based story which contrasts the lifestyle of a white farming family and a a poverty stricken Māori family whose life is ruled by violence, drugs and anger. Ben the protagonist of the violence which devastated Carla’s life very gradually starts to leave some of his original values behind while Carla starts to find hope and a new life with the help of immigrants from China, South Africa and Eastern Europe. The two lives slowly come closer together as Carla lets forth her anger in Ben’s direction. She then reaches to him with her cooking and teaching reading. There is a lot of symbolism and The author writes well. While depressing to start and often gruelling there is hope in the end. I found myself closely involved in this story.
