Summary

THE INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES TOP 5 BESTSELLER AND START OF A THRILLING NEW SERIES: AT MIDNIGHT, ONE OF THEM IS DEAD. BY MORNING, ALL OF THEM ARE SUSPECTS . . .

On New Year's Eve, Rhys Lloyd has a house full of guests.

His lakeside holiday homes are a success, and he's generously invited the village to drink champagne with their wealthy new neighbours. This will be the party to end all parties.

But not everyone is there to celebrate. By midnight, Rhys will be floating dead in the freezing waters of the lake.

On New Year's Day, DC Ffion Morgan has a village full of suspects.

The tiny community is her home, so the suspects are her neighbours, friends and family - and Ffion has her own secrets to protect.

With a lie uncovered at every turn, soon the question isn't who wanted Rhys dead . . . but who finally killed him.

In a village with this many secrets, a murder is just the beginning.

Wouldn't have guessed this was by Clare Mackintosh

Love all of Clare Mackintosh's thrillers and so looked forward to this one and had in on pre-order since day one ... but I would just have never have guessed it was by her.
I was excited this was the first in a new series but I just could not get into it and did not care for the detective or her family situation.
I just found it all rather dull and after trying a couple of chapters I am sadly giving up.
What a pity :-(

Clare’s best yet

Loved this book, and could tell that the author is attached to the beautiful surroundings of Wales because of her descriptive ability of the area and community which greatly enhanced the atmosphere and feel of the story.
The plot and characters were complex but drew me in, there were surprises along the way and I’m left wanting another book to find out what happens next.

This book was a joy to listen to because Chloe Angharad Davies is an exceptional narrator. I hope she continues to record the future books in this series.

Heavy handed accents

Buried within its 400+ pages there’s a decent plot.
Plus points: the location was great; the premise was good; there was a nice cast and the central mystery was intriguing.
Negative points: the landscape and houses were strangely indistinct and the characters were unsubtle.
In addition, the first-person present-tense narratives jarred. The constant back and forth in time, reliving the same event through the eyes of different people, was confusing and became irritating quite quickly.
It also slowed down the story, which you don’t want in a page-turner mystery.
After starting as an ebook, I switched to the audiobook to hear the lilting pronunciation of all the Welsh words, but sadly the narrator made heavy weather of the text with harsh distracting accents.

I wasn’t blown away

I love this author and was super excited to listen to this, it was ok but I don’t think I enjoyed it as much as her other books.

The story is engaging but i did find it was hard to keep track of who everyone was (I tend to listen in the car on short journeys)

All in all a good story and I will probably listen to the next instalment to follow the character

appalling narative

Having enjoyed Claire Mackintosh's previous novels both reading and listening to, I was looking forward to this new one. I can't comment on the story as I only could manage a few chapters. Chloe, the narrator has a lovely speaking voice but her attempt at both the Welsh and Liverpudlian accents and the different characters were I'm sorry to say appalling, think nails on a chalk board, a very very uncomfortable listen. I've received my refund . thank you. I'll buy this one to read .

Totally different to authors other books

Amazed this is actually by Clare Mackintosh, nowhere near as good as previous books. Uninteresting characters, boring storyline and poorly written.

Speed the reader up

Story was weak and disappointing. Nice descriptions of Wales and enjoyed hearing the Welch names but overall not worth the read.
The reader was poor with very odd pauses or editing. The reading was made much better by speading it up to 1.2.
Wouldn’t recommend this book to friends.

Couldn't finish

Really disappointed by this book. No fault of the performance but I found the story incredibly unengaging. I got about halfway through before returning the book. Such a shame as Clare Macintosh's other work is fantastic.

Awful narrator!

Had to stop - could not stand the narrators voice any longer - a shame since I normally really enjoy Clare Mackintosh!
