About this listen

They went to Davenport Manor, thinking it would be their last night together. They were right.

The year is 1984. It may not be the dystopian future envisioned by George Orwell, but instead the year that Kenny Loggins brought us Footloose. It was also the year that four teenage boys from the small English town of Hulmsford spent an ill-fated night in Davenport Manor—a notorious building from local legend synonymous with tragedy, cruelty, and murder.

As the night progresses, so do the supernatural and insidious events that will pit the boys into a desperate battle—not only for their sanity and survival, but against each other.

The Last Night is a haunted house novel infused with sardonic humour, Portmanteau horror, and 80s nostalgia.

Great old school horror story. School friends spending the night in a haunted house, what could go wrong. Interesting back stories of the lads and very well narrated.

I've listened to and reviewed most of McElhenny's work and I can honestly say this has become my second favourite novel he's written so far (if you've not read/listened to Avenging Aranis: The Flames Of The Inferno you're in for a treat). So what makes The Last Night a great novel? The characters are believable and well written, drawing you into their last night together. The humour is understated and mostly based around the banter between the characters and does not detract from the rising terror as the story progresses. The 80's vibe is present throughout with a few kickbacks to earlier decades regarding horror movies. Absolutely loved the portmanteau horror plot device utilised in this novel, it just works so well.

Will Duzington's narration was excellent with each character easily recognisable from another. The accents aren't overplayed nor are the emotions hammed up. Subtle use of sound FX is utilised where necessary but I would have loved to have heard a full soundscape for this one just to add to the creepiness (it's not not a criticism just a preference of mine). Sound quality is decent with no noticeable issues impacting the flow of the story.

Overall this is truly worth a listen and I certainly would enjoy a sequel in the future.

The Last Night is a haunted-house novel infused with sardonic humour, horror, and a strong dose of nostalgia. The characters are memorable, the writing is sharp, and the story balances laughs with genuine chills extremely well. Will Duzington’s narration is spot-on and really brings the story to life, perfectly matching the tone and humour of the book. Highly recommended for horror fans who enjoy their scares served with wit.
I was kindly given a copy of the book and leave this honest review.
