About this listen

As a child, Asha's mother told her ancient, forbidden stories to drive away her nightmares - and the telling of them killed her. And when Asha repeated those stories, they summoned an ancient dragon which almost destroyed her city and left Asha horribly scarred.

Ever since, she has protected her city and people (and tried to make amends) by dragon slaying. And now she may have a way to both atone for the deaths she caused and to escape an arranged marriage: her father will free her in exchange for the head of Kovu, the ancient dragon.

And the only obstacle in her path is a defiant slave boy....

Critic reviews

"Hugely enjoyable entertainment. Kristen Ciccarelli is most definitely an author to watch." (Edward Coz, author of The Relic Guild)
"An accomplished fantasy novel, of the kind I think of as 'royal palace shenanigans', raised above the commonplace by one marvellous central premise - the idea that dragons are the custodians of the old tale." (Joanne Harris)
"The most simple thing I can say is this is the best book I have ever read and Kirsten Ciccarelli is now my favourite author." (Tomi Adeyemi, author of Children of Blood and Bone)
"A grand endeavour where prejudice and abuse are faced with passion and loyalty, creating a tale where you care about the characters and the world they live in." (Terror Tree)

Loved it. Unpredictable story with nice character development. Narrators London accent was quite nice too. Found my way here from listening to the Crimson Moth which was also excellent.

Refreshing

Starting this trilogy immediately after finishing The Crimson Moth and The Rebel Witch was a challenge—not because of the book itself, but because I was still so immersed in the characters from that duology. I absolutely loved it, and I was ready for closure before moving on.

I chose this book because I enjoyed the author's writing style and, just as importantly, the narrator. A good narrator is crucial for me—if I can’t fully visualise and connect with the characters through their voice, I struggle to get into the story. I usually read books before listening to them, and this was no exception.

The beginning of this book leans heavily on world-building, which took me a little while to settle into. In fact, I found myself revisiting the first four chapters multiple times before fully grasping the setting. However, once I got past the initial introductions—particularly around the fifth character—the story truly took off for me.

I was captivated by the magic, the friendships, and the intricate twists woven throughout the narrative. The world-building, while dense at first, became one of my favourite aspects of the book. If you enjoy stories filled with witches, magic, dragons, pirates, gods, and rich fantasy elements, this series is definitely worth exploring.

I know I’ll be revisiting these books again in the future!

I Love these books!
