Renowned investigator Kembral Thorne is determined to enjoy herself at the year-turning ball despite the presence of her nemesis, notorious cat burglar Rika Nonesuch. But when the guests start dropping dead, Kem has no choice but to get to work.

At the heart of the mayhem is a mysterious clock that sends the ballroom down into strange and otherworldly new layers of reality every time it chimes. As the party plunges through increasingly dangerous versions of their city, Kem will have to rely on her wits - and Rika - to unravel the mystery before catastrophe is unleashed on their world.

Got about 4 hours in before I finally gave up. The dialogue just felt so flat that I couldn’t engage with any of the characters. Constantly revisiting the same character relationships and incentives over and over felt very repetitive. The idea could have been good, but the execution doesn’t do it justice. The narration is good though.

Good narration, flat and repetitive storytelling

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, exploring the new worlds and layers of reality. The storytelling was great and the narration was really good. There was a lot of different characters to keep track of and I did get a bit lost and mixed up but otherwise I loved it. I’ll definitely be downloading the next in the series.

wonderfully enjoyable

As much as l LOVE a lesbian romance this, too often, feels saccharine and too artificially strung out. The reason? Lots of miscommunication between the two leads, combined with emotions briefly brought to life, only to be trampled down because of mysterious betrayals in their recent past. In a novel that's 473 pages, you don't learn the truth until almost two thirds in, and then, unfortunately, it all feels a little twee and becomes increasingly tedious. Perhaps, because the book is all plot or romance (tortured misunderstanding followed by sentimentality), it frequently feels about as subtle as a Mike Tyson uppercut.
And then there's the politics, which is simplistic and draws on false dichotomies, resulting in some reactionary twaddle: revolution depends on violence apparently, and is equally as bad as as a coup.
Still it is mostly engaging (until the politics spoiling the final act) and the worldbuilding is fun and sometimes (very) funny - the echo with the sack...

Moira Quirk is brilliant (as usual)!
