About this listen

Glasgow, 1990. Paddy Meehan's relaxed Saturday in front of the TV is shattered when the police knock on her door. Terry Patterson has been found naked in a ditch, executed with a shot through his temple.

He was her first love and her hero - the sort of journalist she'd always aspired to be. Paddy chucked him months ago, but she's down as his next of kin. He has also left her everything in his will: a house in Ayrshire, boxes of notebooks...and a folder. As Paddy begins her investigation into his murder, she realises that if the secret he was about to expose was worth killing for, she is in terrible danger...

Critic reviews

"This is crime writing as a morality tale." ( Guardian)
"This is an excellent book and I applaud Denise Mina for the power of the prose, the turn of phrase that had me both laughing and crying, but I also applaud Katy Anderson for her incredible reading – well reading is only half the story, dramatisation would be closer to the mark. She had the characters jumping out in front of me. Her Scottish accents were terrific but her switch to a Belfast accent left me speechless. She is nothing short of amazing. I loved her reading and I will be looking out for her in the future. Wonderful. The climax is powerful and although I may have missed earlier books in the series I will certainly not miss the next one. I can’t wait." ( Lizzie Hayes Mystery Women)

Really enjoyed the story but the narration is comical with too many poor over exaggerated accents... made it a difficult listen at times and spoiled the experience.

Great storyline but poor narration

Denise Mina writes really authentic Glasgow-Irish dialogue, making the tough world of journalism come alive and creating very engaging characters involved in truly hair-raising predicaments. A very gripping read.

Stay breatheless to the last chapter.

Many times I’ve read a book and then had an audio version and mostly enjoyed it. I have to say this is an exception. I come from Glasgow so I’m aware of the course language but to get it screamed at in your ears is just to much.

It’s a better read.
