Summary

Best Spoken Word Grammy Award nominee!

From stand-up comedian and actress Tiffany Haddish comes The Last Black Unicorn, a hilarious, edgy, and heart-wrenching collection of autobiographical essays that will leave you laughing through tears.

Tiffany Haddish grew up in one of the poorest parts of South Central Los Angeles. Her mother wound up with a debilitating brain injury after surviving a car accident. Tiffany never fit in anywhere: not in the households she rotated through in the foster care system and certainly not at the nearly all white high school she had to ride the bus an hour to attend. As an illiterate ninth grader, Tiffany did everything she could to survive. After a multitude of jobs, she finally realized that she had talent in an area she never would have suspected: comedy. Tiffany faced the 'routine' hindrances of climbing the entertainment business ladder - but had the added obstacles of sex, race, and class in her way. But she got there. She's humble, grateful, down to earth, and funny as hell. She still cleans the toilet the way she was shown by a foster mom who worked as a maid, and she still rolls her joints the way one of her foster dads taught her.

Tiffany can't avoid being funny: It's just who she is. But The Last Black Unicorn is so much more than a side-splittingly hilarious collection of essays - it's a memoir of the struggles of one woman who came from nothing and nowhere. A woman who was able to achieve her dreams by reveling in her pain and awkwardness, showing the world who she really is, and inspiring others through the power of laughter.

Lots of laughs

"Grow roses out of the poop."

Lots of laughs and fun listening to Haddish narrate her book. She's managed to add humour to the dark moments in her life.

Haddish is a great entertainer.

Interesting...

I saw her first on The Daily Show, and I thought she was hilarious. I copped this book think it'd be funny too. But, honestly it wasn't. It was actually very sad. Her story is quite moving and she is rather candid and revelatory of her flaws, which was what made this book worthwhile to me. Tiffany had no problem airing out her demons for the world to see. This whole thang was like a vicarious heart to heart and I totally dig it.

Good read but a bit confusing.

This was a really good book. I could really relate. The story did jump around alot, so I found myself lost at times. You would think that this would be a funny story because she is a comedian. Couldn't be further from the truth. The story was painful, joyous and real. I'm glad she was able to tell her story. Good read.

The last black unicorn indeed!

I loved this book. I particularly enjoyed listening to Tiffany's voice as she narrated the story. And hearing about her experiences makes me admire her even more. Yes, she's a talented comic but most of all she's a super strong woman for having the fortitude to deal with her traumatic childhood & Adult experiences rather allowing these bad memories to envelope her and drown her. I wish her continued success, joy and happiness in all of her endeavors. This book has many life lessons & will revitalize your life!

Raw

Most memorable and favorite character was Roscoe. Tiffany has definitely done what others would never do or admit to doing. I love that she's 100% transparent and unapologetic about it. I wish more people were like her...living their truth whether good or bad.

Grow 🌹 Roses Out Of The Poop

Those are the last six words of this unique memoir, and they truly encapsulate the author’s indomitable spirit in the face of the many potentially soul-crushing misfortunes that have afflicted her since her inauspicious birth. Holy Moses, starting from the most difficult and traumatic childhood imaginable, she managed to raise herself up and out of one horrendous situation after another with almost no assistance or nurturing whatsoever to become a truly self-made woman. Wow. I recommend this book to most mature, unshockable listeners (this book is RAW in every sense that prose can be raw), with only one caveat apart from its often R-rated (bordering on X-rated) language and subject matter. While Haddish thanks “the men who edited” in her Acknowledgments at the end, the book would have benefited greatly from one serious, professional editor, and probably even a coauthor or ghostwriter. Haddish pulls no punches about the fact that she was functionally illiterate until high school, and in the same way in which she refuses to delegate even her grocery shopping or dry cleaning to an assistant, she clearly insisted on writing her own story. That’s the book’s strength, in a way, but also a drawback for those listeners expecting a more structured narrative and more polished prose.

The song “The Last Black Unicorn,” which Haddish also wrote herself and sings at the end of the recording, is one of the most moving postscripts to any autobiography I’ve ever heard. That song, along with Haddish’s inimitable stage presence and vocal talent generally, is reason enough to spend a credit on this excruciatingly honest and touching memoir.

I almost peed!

I loved every minute of this book. Tiffany Haddish is hilarious. Although her story is sometimes tragic, she's able to put a comedic spin on it. She makes you realize that no matter where you come from or how bad you life may be you can still rise.
