About this listen

A SWEEPING NOVEL RICH IN PASSION AND LEGEND FROM SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR, PHILIPPA GREGORY
‘This is a man’s world, Jacquetta, and some women cannot march to the beat of a man’s drum. Do you understand?’

1435. Rouen. Jacquetta of Luxembourg is left a wealthy young widow when her husband, the Duke of Bedford, dies. Her only friend in the great household is Richard Woodville, the Duke’s squire, and it is not long before the two become lovers and marry in secret.

The Woodvilles return to the Lancaster court, where Jacquetta becomes close friends with young King Henry VI’s new queen. But she can sense a growing threat from the people of England, and the danger of royal rivals. The king slides into a mysterious sleep; Margaret, his queen, turns to untrustworthy favourites for help; and Richard, Duke of York, threatens to overturn the whole kingdom for his rival dynasty, the House of York.

Jacquetta fights for her king, her queen and her daughter Elizabeth Woodville, for whom she senses an extraordinary future.

Critic reviews

“Gregory delivers another vivid and satisfying novel of court intrigue, revenge, and superstition. Gregory’s many fans as well as readers who enjoy lush, evocative writing, vividly drawn characters, and fascinating history told from a woman’s point of view will love her latest work.”

Wish they would make a tv series of this like the white queen as Elizabeth woodvilles mother had an interesting story of her own I always wondered about her story when watching the tv series about Edward and Elizabeth.

Beautiful retelling

I love her books and this one does not disappoint even if it took me a bit to get used to the narrator

The narrative and historical context

Narrator somewhat irritating, but such a good story I stuck with it. Characters well-drawn, difficult to achieve with so many characters. Well worth listening.

Another Philippa Gregory triumph!

I have been waiting for the unabridged version of this book for years!! It’s my absolute favourite book and such a good story. It has me gripped beginning to end. There is not one boring part you would wish to skip.
My only downside is the narration. At the beginning Jaquetta is a child of 13 and the person reading (no offence meant here) has the voice of an old lady, not a most beautiful young girl. It just doesn’t work. They should of found someone who’s voice was able to work for her throughout the book

My favourite Philippa Gregory book
