About this listen

Small-time private investigator Ray Lovell veers between paralysis and delirium in a hospital bed. But before the accident that landed him there, he had promised to find Rose Janko. Rose was married to the charismatic son of a travelling gypsy family, Ivo Janko. When Ray starts to investigate her disappearance he's surprised that her family are so hostile towards him. The Jankos have not had an easy past. They are a clan touched by tragedy - either they are cursed, or they are hiding a terrible secret. Could it be that Rose's discovery of that secret led to her disappearance all those years ago? Soon Ray wishes that he'd never asked the question. In a novel that is totally different from Stef's extraordinary debut The Tenderness of Wolves, she shows herself once more to be a matchless storyteller.

I really enjoyed this book even though I figured out the twist fairly early on. The two male leads JJ and Ray are beautifully vulnerable and you find yourself willing a happy end for them. Dan Stevens is an excellent narrator, his voice has a hypnotic cadence which really draws you in.

Enjoyable gypsy mystery

The story unfolds through the eyes of two quite different characters and I think that the writer portrayed both wonderfully. The language, feelings and conversation made you feel as though you had got completely under their skin and Dan Stevens' reading was just outstanding. As with another reviewer I found the detail of gypsy life fascinating but, like another reviewer, was disappointed to see the book slip away to rather a poor ending. I cannot praise the first 75% of the book enough - it really has to be up there towards the top of my list of audibles - surely it was the editor's job to have motivated the author to maintain this level to the end. I did see the big twist coming but don't let that (or my comments about the latter part of the book) put you off. This is well worth a download and an author I shall now look out for. The narrator was new to me too - I'll be looking out for him now as well.

Great storyline with lots of twists. Kept me guessing until the end, which I hated because I desperately wanted it to continue. Another story with this P. I. please Stef.

An excellent story.
I recommend it to anyone who likes a good detective mystery
Quite unusual really. A twist at the end. Not violent or gory. Just right.
