Summary
Small-time private investigator Ray Lovell veers between paralysis and delirium in a hospital bed. But before the accident that landed him there, he had promised to find Rose Janko. Rose was married to the charismatic son of a travelling gypsy family, Ivo Janko. When Ray starts to investigate her disappearance he's surprised that her family are so hostile towards him. The Jankos have not had an easy past. They are a clan touched by tragedy - either they are cursed, or they are hiding a terrible secret. Could it be that Rose's discovery of that secret led to her disappearance all those years ago? Soon Ray wishes that he'd never asked the question. In a novel that is totally different from Stef's extraordinary debut The Tenderness of Wolves, she shows herself once more to be a matchless storyteller.

A bit difficult to get into but worth the effort
Once I got into the book, I really enjoyed it. Surprise ending, but just about credible.

Engaging tale
The story set amongst travelling gypsies is a mystery tale of family secrets. Although I guessed a bit ahead and was impatient for the detective to catch up I did need to revise my guess a few times and never lost interest. This is mainly due to the characters, from the two narrators to the family and other characters. Beautifully read, good range of character voices and tones. The sense of place was detailed but not overlong. Terrific stuff

I always thank the Daily Deal for introducing me to authors I haven't tried before but This was quite slow and unremarkable

A great read Steph Penney does not disappoint
Really got engaged with the characters especially JJ. It was good to explore the missing person versus murder with Ray. Whilst I guessed the ending it didn't really matter..it was well thought through and I wanted the characters end story. Would recommend

Great narration, but very predictable 'twist'
A good author, well written, and excellent reading.... But.... It's set 30 years ago in the traveller community and it views uncomfortably un PC in parts, everyone lives in a grubby trailer and eats unhealthy food, and women are second class and every other cliche. The 'twist' is telegraphed early on and eluded to throughout and anyone who doesn't see it a mile off hasn't watched a tv drama in the last forty years. Very much like those JK Rowling detective novels which I've also struggled to get through, maybe I've seen too many Midsomer Murders but there's little originality here... Actually the problem probably is that these authors don't watch enough tv dramas to realise that they just aren't being fresh enough... The private detective here has relationship problems but is refusing to sign his divorce papers, how many times have you heard that one?
