Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951) was an American novelist and playwright who, in 1930, became the first American to win the Nobel Prize for literature. His last distinctive pulp novel, The Innocents, follows a longtime married couple as they vacation away from their home in New York City and contemplate starting a business.

Editor reviews

Sinclair Lewis' pulp novel tells the story of Seth and Sarah Jane Appleby, a married couple from New York who move to Cape Cod to try their luck as owners of a teashop catering to tourists. Narrator Rick Reitz's animated performance encapsulates the wide-eyed couple's naive enthusiasm for their new life - that is, until the teashop fails. Seth can't get his old job as a shoe salesman back, so the two wander over to West Virginia, where they get involved with a community of hobos, somehow teaching them manners and morals. Reitz maintains an air of amusement throughout his narration, particularly as the hobos spread humorously inaccurate urban legends about the couple.
