About this listen

Meet the woman behind the politician

Since stepping down in 1990, Margaret Thatcher has become a cardboard cut-out hate figure or an iconic defender of freedom, depending on your politics. In The Incidental Feminist: Friend, foe, femme fatale: The truth about Thatcher, Tina Gaudoin investigates the complexities of the woman behind the tropes.

Drawing upon explosive new material from the archives and interviews with her contemporaries, Gaudoin reveals how Thatcher triumphed over rampant misogyny and class prejudice to normalize female power and manipulated her femininity, sexuality, and intellect to become the most powerful woman in the world.

Very enjoyable, a pragmatic narrative, no fawning. Audibly speaking, a real page turner. Recommended, especially for those who lived through the period of her governments.

Feminism advocates for full rights for all people. By that definition Thatcher was not a feminist.

I can understand why Gaudoin would admire Thatcher but I do not do so myself.

Gaudoin presents Thatcher as an underdog and she was. But the line "Margaret Thatcher was a badass" was cringe.

Yes, she thrived in a very misogynistic climate but so did Phyllis Schlafly.

She was arrogant and full of herself and lacked empathy. I do not think neurodivergence is an excuse for this behaviour.

Non-Feminist but pro-women's rights
