Summary

Rosa Hyde is the daughter of a time traveller, stuck in the year 1945, forced to live through it again and again. The same bulletins, the same bombs, the same raucous victory celebrations. At last she breaks out and falls through time, slipping from one century to another - and she is not alone.

Wandering with her is Tommy Rust, time gypsy and daredevil, certain in the depths of his being that he will live forever. Their journeys take them from the ancient shores of forming continents to the bright lights of future cities. They tell themselves that they need no home, that they are anything but lost....

Critic reviews

"A gothic road novel...the pace is well-handled throughout. This is the territory of Jungian archetypes, or the Seven Basic Plots, but the old ones are the good ones." ( Guardian)
"What all the best fiction should be; something rich and strange." (Marcus Sedgwick)

Still thinking about it

If you could sum up The Immortals in three words, what would they be?

Like Cloud Atlas

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Immortals?

Near the end, in the future when she encounters Harding again, but they don't remember each other

Which scene did you most enjoy?

When she was the Fabulist in the garden with the lady of the house and her daughters

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Born to travel the tides of time, but at what cost?

Any additional comments?

I need to re-read this to consider the ideas more. I was left with so many thoughts and questions.

mediocre

A very amateurish story, and lifelessly narrated (not that I can blame the reader for lacking passion here. you can't breathe life into a hollow).
