There were two problems for me. The first one was why the evidence of an immaterial soul naturally leads to the acceptance of Christianity. Why not the philosophical position of ‘Idealism’? Why not Buddhism? The second problem was towards the end where the author(s) reveals an uncompromising acceptance of Christian dogma. It’s stated that although we should be sympathetic towards those that suffer from gender ‘Dysphoria’, God made us male or female upon conception and no amount of ‘mutilation’ will change that. He doesn’t entertain the possibility that sometimes the brain doesn’t receive the hormones in the womb that wire it to match the body. A female brain can develop in a male body .No amount of counselling will reverse this ‘Dysphoria’ (and one of God’s apparent blunders) and to deny any sort of realignment because it offends God makes my alarm bells go off. The argument shifts here from reasoned argument to religious dogma. It follows that God is also offended by Gay relationships since he made us male and female. Should we return to stoning then to death or to keep on the path of acceptance that nothing is quite as straightforward as we might believe it to be? Keeping to the evidence of the mind and brain being different things would have been so much better in my opinion. Claiming to know what God thinks steps outside of the reasonable evidence that made up the majority of this book.
