About this listen
In the depths of Panacea, Marcus lives a life of structure, obedience, and secrets.
Raised for a purpose he doesn't fully understand, Marcus is part of a system that values control over truth. His days are structured, his role carefully shaped. But when he uncovers the existence of identical clones and meets the enigmatic Imogen, his world begins to unravel. Questions surface about his place in society, the illusion of leadership, and the silent rebellion brewing beneath the city's polished facade.
As unrest grows, Marcus finds himself caught between opposing forces: the Voices of Reason, who fight with ideas and patience, and the Black Rose, who wield fear and violence. Both factions want change—but at what cost?
Faced with deception, loyalty, and betrayal, Marcus must confront a haunting truth: some lies are meant to protect, and some are designed to control. But when rebellion is inevitable, can a single spark ignite hope—or will it burn the world down?
The Immortal Lord is a gripping dystopian novella that explores power, sacrifice, and the cost of truth. Perfect for listeners who love thought-provoking, character-driven stories set in dark, uncertain futures.

The frequent time jumps used to advance the plot toward its finale are particularly frustrating. As a listener, I longed to experience more of Marcus’ development—his adventures with Imogen, his explorations beyond his secluded world, and his inner thoughts, fears, and hopes. Similarly, Imogen’s story begged for more detail. How did she secure such a high-security position after childhood? What is her relationship with her mother? What are her personal ambitions, and how does she spend her time outside of work? Accompanying her on her secret excursions through the palace would have been a thrill.
The Black Rose, too, remains underdeveloped. It is introduced as a powerful organisation but sketched only in broad strokes, when it clearly deserves a deeper, more nuanced portrayal.
The ending also felt rushed. A complete restructuring of political power is presented almost in passing, and Imogen’s sudden rise to her final position is unconvincing. It seemed too easy, glossed over by yet another time jump. I would much rather have witnessed her struggle for that role and the resistance she surely would have faced along the way.
On a brighter note, Cathy Conneff’s performance of The Immortal Lord is an absolute delight. Her warm, engaging voice, sharp character distinctions, and flawless pacing elevate the material and make it a pleasure to listen to. Her narration alone deserves five stars.
