About this listen

HE WILL TRAP YOU IN A WORLD OF TERROR

The groundbreaking first novel in the bestselling Joona Linna thriller series.

A TRAUMATISED WITNESS
Karolinska Hospital, Stockholm. Detective Inspector Joona Linna is faced with a boy who witnessed the gruesome murder of his family. He’s suffered more than one hundred knife wounds and is comatose with shock.

A DISGRACED DETECTIVE
Linna’s running out of time. The police do not want him on the case. The killer’s on the run and there are seemingly no clues. Desperate for information, Linna enlists specialist Dr Erik Maria Bark, a hypnotist who vowed never to practise again.

A DEVASTATING CASE
As the hypnosis begins, a long and terrifying chain of events unfurls with reverberations far beyond Linna’s case.

Perfect for fans of Jo Nesbo.

Wow! I loved listening to this- the narration was spot on and really conveyed the tension of the writing. Eamon Riley was excellent at the various accents and voices.
The plot was twisty enough to keep you guessing but not, ultimately, so outlandish that it becomes exasperating as many thrillers do.
One of the best psychological thrillers I’ve come across- my first Lars Kepler novel but certainly not my last; I’ve already downloaded the next Joona Linna book.

Gripping thriller!

The overall premise of the novel is good but it’s too long. The various twists and turns of the story eventually became tedious. Joona Linna’s role in the story seems tangential. Not sure if I’ll be trying the next one in the series.

Far too long

I haven't read many books of this genre until recently but really enjoyed this and thought it was very good, especially for a first novel! The first half might appear slow to some as the story builds but it kept me engaged, the second half was a strong page turner. Some parts of the ending (the environment, the events) were a lot like Your Still Beating Heart i.m.o but I still enjoyed it because the rest of the story was very different. Overall I'd highly recommend it. Really looking forward to reading the 8 others in the Joona Lina series!

Can't wait to go through the rest!

It was unusual both in terms of the shape of the story and also the inclusion of hypnotism. There seemed to be at least three different subplot crime stories all quite loosely interconnected by one family which was strange as you tended to assume at the beginning there was just one plot. I did like it and the characters although some of the behaviours seemed unlikely or atypical of what you’d expect. I was not sure if it was just different in that respect or whether reactions of certain characters were just poorly imagined.

Not sure about this one, was quite different though

What did you like most about The Hypnotist?

The story was well constructed, it slowly pulled you in, there is a nice level of complexity to the story

What other book might you compare The Hypnotist to, and why?

if you like the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Harry Hole you will like this, it is a tried and tested formula. However, the lead character does not have the personality or depth as other characters such as Harry Hole etc.

Would you be willing to try another one of Eamonn Riley’s performances?

No
