About this listen

The Hundred Years War (1337-1453) dominated life in England and France for well over a century. It became the defining feature of existence for generations. This sweeping book is the first to tell the human story of the longest military conflict in history. Historian David Green focuses on the ways the war affected different groups, among them knights, clerics, women, peasants, soldiers, peacemakers, and kings. He also explores how the long war altered governance in England and France and reshaped peoples' perceptions of themselves and of their national character.

Using the events of the war as a narrative thread, Green illuminates the realities of battle and the conditions of those compelled to live in occupied territory; the roles played by clergy and their shifting loyalties to king and pope; and the influence of the war on developing notions of government, literacy, and education. Peopled with vivid and well-known characters - Henry V, Joan of Arc, Philippe the Good of Burgundy, Edward the Black Prince, John the Blind of Bohemia, and many others - as well as a host of ordinary individuals who were drawn into the struggle, this absorbing book reveals for the first time not only the Hundred Years War's impact on warfare, institutions, and nations, but also its true human cost.

If you're looking for a clear linear narrative of *what* happened *when* in the Hundred Years War, look elsewhere. If you're looking to understand the *why* and *so what?*, then this is excellent. Has got me genuinely interested in this period in a way I haven't been since I was a child.

Excellent thematic history

Really enjoyed this one, a creative approach to the history, and to examining how the conflict changed the military, social, economic, and political landscape of the time. Many enjoyable glimpses into the lives and attitudes of the people who were there. Not a battle by battle, blow by blow chronology, more a look into who and why rather than where and when. It seems a very different world, but in many ways the causes and consequences of wars are the same then as they are now.

Real people

Very interesting structure which reviews the conflict by theme or peoples instead of chronologically.

The reader makes an effort to ensure (I assume) correct pronunciation of French and Latin words and names.

The author clearly tried to remain as objective as possible and any opinions exprssed are largely quoted from those expressed at the time or through other historical sources.

The tone of voice can come across quite neutral and abrupt, but this is a small criticism.

Well Researched & Objective

This book covers exactly what it says on the tin. It discusses the impact the 100 year war had on different types of people. Unfortunately, by doing this it makes one of the most exciting periods of history incredibly boring. The structure of this book is very confusing, you jump from different decades and people very quickly with no explanation. The author also repeats himself over and over again which becomes boring and annoying.

I’m glad I read this book simply because I’m always happy to learn more about the 100 year war. However, there are so many better books out there with an easier structure to follow and greater excitement.

The narrator was ok. He was a bit monotone which did not help the entertainment of this book.
