Yeine Darr is an outcast from the barbarian north. But when her mother dies under mysterious circumstances, she is summoned to the majestic city of Sky - a palace above the clouds where gods' and mortals' lives are intertwined.
There, to her shock, Yeine is named one of the potential heirs to the king. But the throne of the Hundred Thousand Kingdoms is not easily won, and Yeine is thrust into a vicious power struggle with a pair of cousins she never knew she had. As she fights for her life, she draws ever closer to the secrets of her mother's death and her family's bloody history.
But it's not just mortals who have secrets worth hiding and Yeine will learn how perilous the world can be when love and hate - and gods and mortals - are bound inseparably.
The Inheritance Trilogy begins with The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, continues in The Broken Kingdoms and concludes in The Kingdom of Gods.

Great story and narrator
This is like a revision of religion and history and human behaviour and a resetting of the balance. It’s so good to hear a story that turns tables in many ways, and is still a fulfilling fantasy novel. The narrator’s voice is perfect for the job and shapes and colours the story as it deserves. It’s delicate enough to be YA yet delivers a stronger hit overall.

Enjoyable story and concepts
I enjoyed the story and ideas. The narrator has a tendency to randomly give lots of characters accents from the south of the US though

I wanted to like the book more, in the end I didn't care enough about the main characters I also guessed the ending well before the end

Very well done
I’ve read the book already and used this audiobook to be able to read it again whilst working, and the voice work and reading of it fits perfectly how I felt about it when reading !
The book is one of my favourites, I found Jemisin and read every single one of her books in a row within the month. The writing and storytelling are everything I ever wanted from sci-fi and everything missing from bland white colonial narratives. I absolutely recommend ‘hundred thousand kingdoms’ if you want to fall deeply in love, mourn, be terrified, be hopeful.
Plus, the way that it’s written - when you come back the second time, knowing the story, you will have your heart broken all over again. What are you waiting for!!!

A good work, if a bit Mills and Boone at times
Solid 8/10, good combination of a unique world, high court intrigue and deistic power. Somewhat let down by the author being very indulgent in both her description of setting and sex, slowing the book down.

Great Narrator
I really wanted to like this book. The core theme of the book is one that sounded very interesting (I.e the power structures of old gods). Unfortunately, I found this thematically rich concept was particularly well explored. It felt like I was just being shown over and over again how unjust the system was with little thematic dialectic. That, in of itself, wouldn’t be a problem if it was stylistically explored. However much of the book is the rather bland main character being told things over and over again by more interesting characters. There’s so so much telling in this book it becomes exhausting.
The one thing that saves the audiobook is that the narrator is outstanding and is clearly having a whale of a time reading this to us. I kept up with it for so on the strength of the narrator alone.

It was ok
The concepts within the story itself were interesting and enjoyable but unfortunately it lacked the word building and depth of character the story deserved. Also a little cheesy at times.
Narration was ok, there was use of different voices and inflections but it was somewhat flat.

Struggled to enjoy this
Narrator is excellent. However the story is predictable and feels very much like a teen drama love story. I had downloaded the second book, having enjoyed previous series by N.K. Jemisin, but I won’t be listening to it.

Oh dear
Cod religious overtones, no likeable characters, poorly read. I understand the author has gone on to better things and is highly thought of. If so, there is hope for us all
