Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

When 11-year-old Henrietta arrives at the Fishers' residence in Paris, little does she know what fascinating secrets the house itself contains.

Henrietta finds that her visit coincides with that of Leopold, an intense child who has come to Paris to be introduced to the mother he has never known. In the course of a single day, the mystery surrounding Leopold, his parents, Henrietta's agitated hostess and the dying matriarch in bed upstairs comes to light slowly and tantalisingly.

Narrator didn’t follow rhythms of prose

I did finish the novel, but found the narrator grating. She had only one cadence and butchered sentences to fit into it. I think it was probably well written, but difficult to tell.

Appalling narration spoils a good book

I couldn't finish this due to the really poor narration. The narrator gets the emphasis wrong all the time like someone who has never learned to read aloud, swallowed words, was unable to differentiate characters and quite apart from that was wooden and uninteresting. What a shame, as I was enjoying the story - I will buy the book instead.

Ruined by very poor reading

Interesting book ruined by very poor reading. Meaning was lost and mispronunciations often ludicrous. Struggled to finish.
