About this listen

Disturbing. Original. Terrifying. The 'master of horror' is back with the chilling tale of what lurks in the walls of an abandoned hospital.

In this abandoned hospital, pain lives on... and it wants revenge.

St Philomena's military hospital has been abandoned for over three years. Now Lilian Chesterfield, who works for one of the most successful building companies in England, is in charge of developing it into a luxury housing complex.

But as soon as she and her colleagues start work in the Jacobean-style mansion, their dream turns into a nightmare. They hear screaming from wards full of empty beds. They hear doors slamming and find cutlery scattered over the kitchen floor. Then they see faces peering at them from the mullioned windows.

Lilian is pragmatic–she doesn't believe in the supernatural. But just when she's put her mind at rest by scouring the mansion from top to bottom and finding nothing, a former patient of St Philomena's arrives with a warning. The hospital is haunted. And it is haunted by something a thousand times more terrifying than ghosts...

This is an interesting take on the haunted house story. I found it stopped being scary about halfway through and felt more like a thriller at that point, which isn’t a bad thing! I did have some issues with the female lead being a little questionably portrayed in places. Overall this was a good story and worth checking out if you like haunted houses!

Good story

Nothing to say except it all centred round the neck of my woods and I shan’t go looking for the hospital any time soon

Yet another masterpiece

While the story itself was thrilling already, Gregory's acting/reading brought it to life and color. The writer himself did reproduce some culturally dubious and appropriative stereotypes as well as dismissive narratives about women, but kudos to Gregory for adding to the story a voice that redeemed many of the shortcomings of the author. An interesting and compelling listen regardless!

Emma Gregory's voice acting is fantastic!

the narrator was trying way too hard, and the screaming was so jarring she should have backed away from the microphone as I had to continuously turn down the volume, she really ruined the story for me. she over acted and this wasn't meant to be a dramatized reading. it actually really made me angry! I found it awful.

absolutely jarring narration ruined an interesting plot

Emma Gregory is a masterful storyteller who created every character (whatever gender) superbly.
A really gripping tale that keeps you riveted although I was a little disappointed by the ending - but hey, this is a great listen!

Fantastic narrator - one of the best
