Summary

The second book in the Nightfall Saga, the stunning new epic fantasy series set in the world of the Demon Cycle, from New York Times bestselling author Peter V. Brett.

Humanity thought the war with demonkind was over. Now, after less than a generation to rebuild, the demon corelings have returned with a vengeance. The Spear of Ala—the fortress that stands at the gates of the demon’s hive—is the last bastion against the horde, and reports say it may already have fallen.

Olive Paper is expected to take the vanguard in the fight. Only an heir of Kaji can wield the artifact that opens the gates of the Spear of Ala, and as Ahmann Jardir’s child, Olive seems destined for a role as leader and savior. But Olive does not wish to follow in her father’s footsteps any more than she did her mother’s.

Darin Bales was born with supernatural senses that he struggles to process, so much that even those who love him believe he can barely take care of himself. Yet to save his mother from the clutches of Alagai Ka, the demon king, Darin will brave anything to mount a rescue.

Darin and Olive each strive to walk their own path but find themselves inextricably tied to the legacies of their parents and to a fated confrontation with the demon king and his new hatchling queen. If they fail, humanity may not survive.

Another fantastic installment!

Great story. Absolutely loved it. Although Colin mace has been and will always be the best narrator. I didn't mind these two. Slightly annoying when words are pronounced different but I try not to let it bother me too much.

It's a great world

Really enjoyed the book, but unfortunately the narration is terrible. It's like having a successful TV show and then in season 6 you change the lead actors and pretend everything is the same. There is a few names they get wrong which is infuriating. it breaks the characters. what a shame.

I want more !!

I'd been so looking forward to this. and it didn't disappoint, as always. I love the world Peter has created. The back stories, the reality of war, different beliefs and the fact that not everyone comes out of it in one piece. The narrators are different to one's I listen to on The Desert Prince, and I was worried at first that I wouldn't take to them, but after one chapter I began to love them. 10 out of 10 from me 😀

Ruined by narrator

Loved all the books so far but the narrators are terrible. The mis pronounce place and people all the time which makes it hard to follow.

Disappointed

The story seems to force undertones of issues that are currently relevant. The narrators does not help the story at all.

Story and narrators!

Excellent story and great voice actors! I read previous books and thinking now to buy the audio version of the whole saga.

Unfortunately not a good continuation

I used to love this series and it's precursor. Unfortunately this doesn't feel like a good continuation. Almost all of the actual story development is crammed into the last 20% of the book. Which makes it quite convoluted and feels stressed through. While the first 80% is mostly about teenagers feeling bad about themselves and having relationship issues. In addition the male actor has a southern drawl that feels completely out of place in this world.

Are these actually written by Peter Brett?

These two books have new narrators, I don’t mind this but really resent the lack of continuity in pronunciation of names and places, compared to the previous books. Even more importantly though is the constant repetition and belabouring of Olive and Darin’s powers and feelings. It’s as if the author has decided we can’t remember much about the characters from the previous books or chapter. We know olive was told to hide their strength. Yet everytime there is a confrontation olive has to tell us again!
It’s just such a shame the books didn’t continue in their previous style and skill.
I honestly can’t believe these are Peter Brett
