About this listen

When Florence, a bright London schoolgirl, confronts the sudden death of a teacher, her search for meaning leads her through churches, science fairs, and Hampstead's ancient landscapes. With Darren at her side, she begins piecing together the mysteries of life itself — from the structure of a single cell to the vast, unsettling question of why anything lives or dies at all.

Across the city, journalist Brynn Parry is drawn into two cutting-edge research projects: one listening for patterns in the cosmos, the other mapping the architecture of thought. Both begin to detect signals — mathematical, elegant, and impossible to dismiss — hinting that intelligence may not be unique to Earth.

As Florence's quiet investigations and Parry's high-stakes discoveries edge toward the same revelation, unseen forces move to keep the truth buried. Because some answers, once uncovered, refuse to stay small.

thoroughly enjoyed The Hallmark by Michael Waverley. The characters are strongly written and genuinely endearing — I especially warmed to Florence and Maria. Waverley skilfully weaves together animal science, astronomy, and deep philosophy without ever feeling heavy-handed.

The narration makes the story really easy to follow and visualise, which helped me stay fully engaged throughout. It brings the scenes to life in a way that feels natural and immersive.

The story gently but powerfully invites the reader to confront big questions about life, death, meaning, and what it truly means to be conscious. It’s intelligent, moving, and thought-provoking in the best possible way. Highly recommended.

Really enjoyed this book. Loved the character development and I felt like I could relate to quite a few characters and their feelings. I thoroughly enjoyed the conclusion and I felt gently led to question beliefs and thoughts that are generally accepted and taken for granted. Brilliant book, highly recommend.
