Ex-newspaperman Roger Newton's adventure begins when Claude Lavigne, a power company employee, sees something in the forests of "the gore" - a tiny swatch of unclaimed land created by a surveyor's mistake. His sense of reality unhinged, Lavigne commits suicide.
