Theodora knows she can't keep her five beautiful daughters at home forever - they're too curious, too free spirited, too like their late father. A devoted and resilient mother, Theodora has lived through World War II, through the Nazi occupation of Greece, and through her husband's death, and now she endures the twenty-year-long silence of her daughters' absence.

Story
Sara Loveday ditches her cheating fiancé at the altar and flees with her best friend to the beautiful island of Santaniki. Here, amid olive groves and whitewashed stone villas, where dark cypress trees step down to a cobalt blue sea, Sara vows to change her life. Spotting a gap in the local tourist market, she sets up a wedding-planning business, specialising in 'second time around' couples. For her first big wedding, she borrows the olive garden of a local artists' retreat, but almost at once things begin to go wrong.
Summary
A cherished heirloom reveals the destinies of three generations of women in a powerful saga of lost love by the bestselling Greek author of The House by the River.
After years spent in Germany struggling to come to terms with a dispirited and abusive past, Fenia Karapanos has returned to her roots in Greece. Her estranged grandfather has bequeathed her his villa in Athens, a gesture she assumes is reparation for having disowned her late mother. After taking in a grateful Syrian refugee to help her restore the property - and her life - Fenia discovers a collection of love letters hidden under the floorboards, reaching back nearly a century. In each one, Fenia unfolds another piece of her broken family history.
But it’s Fenia’s solicitous cousin, Melpo, who offers more to the story than Fenia can imagine. Melpo shares everything she knows - about Fenia’s grandmother and mother, their elusive and heartbreaking searches for happiness, and two families linked across decades by betrayal, secrets, abandonment, and forbidden love. It upends everything Fenia believed was true about her family. But it could also draw her closer to finding self-fulfillment - and a place to call home.

Saccharine Love Story
I went to school in Athens and lived in the same neighborhood as some of the characters so I slogged through this book. The narrator's male voices were just odd. The story line was predictable. The female characters were, actually all the characters were two dimensional. This is definitely a romance and that's not my genre.

So good.... but the names! 😬
From other reviewers, I knew keeping all the names straight would be an issue for me, so I thought I was prepared. About 1/3 of the way through I gave up and just enjoyed the book. I wish I’d drawn out a family tree from the beginning though, because by the end of the book, I still wasn’t clear on who was who. It was beautifully written - the confusion was strictly my own problem.

Great read.
Loved it. Good information about Greek culture over the generations starting in the late 1800's.
