Summary

From a talented new name in crime fiction comes a gritty tale of how far we'll go to protect the ones we love.

Everyone says the Elders family are nothing but cheats, thieves, and convicts - a fact 19-year-old Jamie Elders has been trying desperately to escape. She may have the natural talent of a poker savant, but her dreams of going pro and getting the hell out of the tiny town of Blind River, New York, are going nowhere fast - especially when she lands in a huge pile of debt to her uncle Loyal.

At Loyal's beck and call until her debt is repaid, Jamie can't easily walk away - not with her younger brother Toby left at his mercy. So when Loyal demands Jamie's help cleaning up a mess late one night, she has no choice but to agree. But disposing of a dead man and covering up his connection to the town's most powerful judge goes beyond family duty. When it comes out that the victim was a beloved athlete and Loyal pins the murder on Toby, only Jamie can save him. But with a dogged detective on her trail and her own future at stake, she'll have to decide: Embrace her inner criminal, or defy it - and face the consequences.

Amazing

Hypnotic and very well written. Characters have real depth. Narrator did an amazing job too. I can’t wait to read more from this author.

A new angle

While we have met many of these tropes before, the author makes the family more convincing and a lightness of touch stops the story from revealing itself too quickly. The central character is fully realised by her relationships and responses. Her skill is not one I have read about like this before.

Captivating

An excellent book - well written and narrated.
I often wonder how good books like this are only discovered accidentally, whilst some badly written and narrated books are overly promoted.
I would love to hear more by this author.
Highly recommended!

The Girl from Blind River

A very average novel. Maybe a little above. Written well enough. The characters are believable. The author did a truly excellent job at creating the atmosphere - a deep sense of claustrophobia in that small, stagnant town.

Was entertaining

I struggle to get past errors in books when they are as basic as 'on accident '. You do something by accident or on purpose, you do not do them on accident or by purpose. Poor writing skills, poor editing and that the narrator just read it and the producer just listened to that reading is too irritating to get past.

Otherwise, good story if a little predictable, sad in that it highlights the plight of the poor in developed countries. The main character is very likeable. If it were not for the other issues I'd have liked to have heard more of her story.

Quite a good listen

I would've liked a bit more length for character development as the story felt a little superficial. That said, it was a good story, believable characters and very well read. The main character (Jamie) has an understanding of her town and the people in it that we accept at face value until, one by one, each of those assumptions are challenged. None of the characters are all good or all bad which is refreshing but also kept me guessing about who can be trusted.

This was in the plus catalogue but I wouldn't have been disappointed if I'd used a credit on it!

This was a story with a difference

unusual story about poverty and illegal Poker. Not my usual genre but thoroughly enjoyed it to the very end. Narration was first class.

Really enjoyed this

Strong story with relatable characters. Great narration, with recognisable voices for each of the characters - not easy when there are so many. Good pace. Even though a little predictable ( not necessarily a bad thing), ending satisfying.
