Excellent!
I just couldn't put this down...in the last 24 hours I've found myself finding excuses to iron clothes, wash the dishes, sweep the porch etc etc - any mindless task as long as I was left alone to listen to this book. And I am not a mystery/suspense fan. I normally go for high quality literary fiction and dramas.
The story, like the first book in this series, centers on the brilliant but antisocial computer hacker "The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo" who becomes mixed up in a series of murders, and so the suspense builds. But it's not just the gripping storyline that makes the writing excellent but rather the characters who are interesting and multi faceted. I'd say that this second book in the trilogy was even better than the first which I also liked. It can be read separately and understood perfectly well although I'd advise reading them in order if possible. The narration was really good - he managed to get his tongue round the difficult Swedish names that I promptly forgot (I had to rewind a few times as the plot gets quite complicated in parts). He also acted out an impressive variety of different accents and voices for the different characters.
The abridgement was seamless - had the unabridged version been available I would have taken it as it would have afforded me more hours of pure pleasure listening to this book.
In summary, first rate for its genre - even if you're not a suspense fan you won't regret trying this one. Roll on Jan 2010 for the next part!

Abridged just not the same
As soon as it started the voice 'felt' wrong, I should have realised, but didn't, it is a short version with (in my opinion) an inferior narrator. It wasn't my cup of tea, the choice is, of course, yours.

The Girl who Played with Fire
following the girl with the dragon tattoo the story continues with Mika Blomquist and Lizabeth. Excellent plotting with many twists and turns. You need to "get your ear tuned" to all the Swedish names as some sound similar and the plot is so intricate you can miss a vital piece. I wanted to listen all the time, but had to ration myself as I didn't want it to end! Roll on the third of the trilogy.

Not a great narration
Unlike the unabridged version, this short version uses a very British narrator. Whilst not a massive problem normally, the use of crude British dialects (Yorkshire, Mockney) is distracting and annoying. Given that the book is clearly set in Sweden, why not just avoid the use of accents altogether?
The unabridged versions have a narrator with better Swedish accents and pronunciation and the voice has more gravitas.

I'm a long distance runner and have gobbled up the miles recently listening to both of these books. They are beautifully written and narrated, and one is gripped by both the relationships and the storyline in turn. And, they've certainly helped my training - I haven't wanted to stop running 'just one more chapter, then I'll stop'! Hurry up number 3.

Brilliant book but!
I read the trilogy when they were released and have enjoyed the films. I've decided to listen to the audio books and have only one complaint. Why does Silanda sound like a cockney barrow boy? Narrations ok just some of his accents are I'll chosen. To be fair you get used to it pretty quickly

Weird accents!
Why did the Swedish characters go through so many intermittent episodes of being completely cockney?? The man reading did some pretty off putting accents throughout. Was a bit distracting. Loved reading these books years ago but I’ve just listened to the first 2 and found them really hard work. Maybe just in a different frame of mind but I’m not listening to any more :(

Maybe the book is fine, the abridged version isn't
After listening to the first book in the series (The girl with the dragon tattoo) which I enjoyed, I went ahead and listened to this one. Like I said in the title maybe the book itself is just as good as the first one, but the abridged version is very bad. It mostly feels like reading a book for children (in terms of details, and complexity).
I would not recommend this, and I won't buy the last one in the series as it is only currently available abridged.
One last note about the narration, if you listened to the first book, it will take you quite some time to get used to the narrator, it's not that it's bad, it's just very different.

Fired-up
The second in the Millenium series, by late Stieg Larsson. This book maintains the momentum of the first one (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). A story with pace, action and surprises, it is well worth a listen. At time it stretches credulity somewhat, but then, what good thriller does not? Somewhat surprising, different narrators are used for the two books. Both are good, but this does break the continuity unnecessarily.

Not clever, I struggle to keep interested...
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I am half way and not so eager to finish... its just rather boring and full of unnecessary mundane things with a bit of interesting sides of the characters.
Would you recommend The Girl Who Played With Fire to your friends? Why or why not?
I wouldn't really recommend this novel, the performance is dull and the voice is a weird interpretation. Also the performer for some reason reads as if it was set in England and that Lisbeth was from a ghetto. The author is just desperately trying to fill my mind with nonsense and the story (which is rather simple so far) is taken too long to unfold.
Was The Girl Who Played With Fire worth the listening time?
Not really.
