Story
Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned. As a huntsman of the Church, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. But when Lou pulls a wicked stunt, the two are forced into an impossible situation - marriage. Lou, unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, must make a choice. And love makes fools of us all.

Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Summary
An instant New York Times best seller.
This program includes a bonus interview with the author.
Set in a darkly glamorous world, New York Times best-selling author Roshani Chokshi's The Gilded Wolves is full of mystery, decadence, and dangerous but thrilling adventure.
Paris, 1889: The world is on the cusp of industry and power, and the Exposition Universelle has breathed new life into the streets and dredged up ancient secrets. In this city, no one keeps tabs on secrets better than treasure-hunter and wealthy hotelier Séverin Montagnet-Alarie. But when the all-powerful society the Order of Babel seeks him out for help, Séverin is offered a treasure he never imagined: his true inheritance.
To find the ancient artifact the Order seeks, Séverin will need help from a band of experts: an engineer with a debt to pay; a historian who can't yet go home; a dancer with a sinister past; and a brother in all but blood who might care too much. Together, they'll have to use their wits and knowledge to hunt the artifact through the dark and glittering heart of Paris. What they find might change the world, but only if they can stay alive.
Praise for The Gilded Wolves:
"What’s better than Paris? Nothing. Except, that is, for Roshani Chokshi’s magical Belle Epoque Paris, where a crew of brilliant, tricksy, dispossessed young people are fighting personal demons and powerful foes to carve out their place in the world. This is a book to swan dive into, swim around in, luxuriate in.” (Laini Taylor, New York Times best-selling author of Strange the Dreamer)
"A masterpiece of imagination. Dazzling, sharp, and as dangerous as a freshly polished sword, The Gilded Wolves is a brilliant kaleidoscope of decadent world building, seductive magic, and utterly immersive storytelling." (Stephanie Garber, New York Times best-selling author of Caraval)
Critic reviews
"Leigh Bardugo's Six of Crows and Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code converge in this dazzling new fantasy.... An opulent heist adventure that will leave readers voracious for more.” (Kirkus, starred review)

Bad voice over. Go get the ebook instead!
Couldn't finish it. The male narrator has this very grating habit of saying al his sentences the same way. He starts his sentences with a high pitch then ends them with a low pitch. For every. Single. Sentence. There's no cadence or flow! Both voice artists give almost every character this strange approximation of a French accent, and it really gets in the way of my enjoyment by calling the attention to the accent rather than the actual speech. The story was okay and I'm loving the representation (Enrique is Filipino! Honestly the representation us Pinoys needed! We have autistic rep here too!) but this audiobook is impossible to finish. I'm glad I bought the ebook version too or else I just wouldn't waste my time with this nonsense.

Struggle to get through with the narration...
Overall I liked the story, but I feel like this book suffered because of the male narrator. I don’t know if he was just trying to create a distinct distance between when he spoke and the characters dialogue, but it was as if a robot was reading. There was no emotion or inflection in his speech. It made it really hard to get through. I’ve heard other books with PJ Ochlan and don’t recall them being this bad. The female narrator was good.

I thought you all were exaggerating.
I just finished listening to another series of Chokshi's (the Pandava novels) and was excited to check out other works of hers. The description for The Gilded Wolves intrigued me. I love Fantasy Adventure and I'm also a fan of Historical Fiction, so I figured this novel would be perfect for me-- and you know, it probably is! But I can't say for sure until I read the book myself, because my god, there's no way I am letting this narrator read it for me.
When I first read the reviews that were already here, I wanted to believe that people were being harsher than they needed to be with the male narrator. I've picked up movies and novels with negative reviews before that I wound up loving anyway, and knowing that there were two narrators for this book, I wondered if it was just a matter of one especially talented narrator being paired with a relatively novice one. In short; I was determined to give The Gilded Wolves the benefit of the doubt.
I was wrong.
If you've ever heard Male Siri, this guy is... just a little worse. His delivery is so dry, so robotic, so painful and so willfully unnatural at times that his performance almost felt spiteful, like some sort of petty underhanded vengeance on people who felt like listening to a good story instead of reading it themselves. If his goal was to make me regret buying this novel, he succeeded. I couldn't finish Chapter 1 even though I was interested in the characters and the worldbuilding being presented.
I love Audible because it's allowed me to keep up with books that interest me even with a hectic work/school schedule, so this was genuinely disappointing. My plan is to buy a physical copy of the book sometime and wait until I'm on break to give it a read. I intend to give The Gilded Wolves the chance it deserves.

Not a fan of the male narrator
Minutes into this i have to say if you like a narrator that sounds like a computer generated robot this book is for you.
It is difficult for me to get into because the voice is also monotone.
I can't say much about the story, because again the voice doesnt do it for me. :(

Librarian vs. Reader: The Gilded Wolves
Librarian: If you're looking for a book to use for a teen book group or one to use for a battle of the books competition, this is a great choice. It has a little bit of something for everyone. Mystery, Adventure, Fantasy, Humor. There's plenty for all sorts of readers to enjoy, and enough actual meat to encourage all sorts of debate and discussion. Plus, it's by an author who is definitely on the rise, so it's likely to be in demand by many readers. I would definitely encourage teen librarians to snap this one right up.
Reader: So much fun. This book is part fantasy, part historical fiction, part heist story, non-stop action. The story drew me right in and didn't slow down. I loved the ride, and I can't wait until the next one comes out. Because, man, that cliffhanger. I need to know what happens next.
I actually really enjoyed the audio performance on this one too. The accents were well done, and each character felt distinct.I hope they keep the same narrator as the series goes forward.

The Male Narration was horrible
The other reviews were right - the male narrator’s work on the prose was horrendous. He sounded like a bizarre automaton while reading the prose but completely fine for dialogue. I just did not understand.
Otherwise I enjoyed the story and the female narrator. I do wish they had figured out a way to give Laila an Indian accent (she had been in Paris for 2 years so a French accent didn’t make sense), and at the very least learn how to pronounce the Hindi and Tamil words.

Did not know it was YA fiction even so narration was below par
That said even for young adults the male and female narrators should get their acts together on how to pronounce the names of the main characters. The female narrator pronounced the French names correctly, The male narrator was clueless and, quite honestly lazy for not seeking to find out how to pronounce these names and you surely do not want narrators differing on name pronunciations. It is irritating to readers. That also means there was a lack of QC by the publishers/Audible management. I know they can and have done better with other titles.

Meh
I didn't realize this is a YA novel (although I've nothing against them: see HP, Hunger Games). But. While there's lots of imagination packed into this novel, and while it's unfair to call derivative on anyone writing YA fiction in the post-Rowling universe, I do have to throw down a flag on dialogue and plot transitions. Multiple examples; instead of quoting them I will merely plant the seed. Look for yourselves.
The audio book performance, specifically that of the male reader, was wooden... no, scratch that, ridiculous...no scratch that, just bad. Jim Dale, Stephen Fry, Gerard Doyle, Carolyn McCormick modulate tone, emotion, and pace. And P.J. might learn a trick or two from them.
Reading was fun enough. Listening was grating.

Loved this book! What an adventure!
“The Gilded Wolves” is a fantasy adventure tale written by Roshani Chokshi. The story is set in Paris in 1889 and follows the story of group of misfits that band together to recover a lost artifact. Séverin is leader of the group who takes the outsiders on their quest that includes mythological creatures and objects. The stakes are high because Séverin is on his own personal journey to restore his stolen inheritance. The dynamic group includes a friend, an engineer, a dancer and a historian. As the story unfolds, the characters are put to the test and will need to work together in order to find the lost item.
Overall, this book was simply enthralling . The story is told from different points of view, so the reader is able to get to know each of the characters in a more intimate way. Their inner thoughts, feelings and points of view help to develop the story and enable the reader to truly become invested in the events.
The first few pages contained a lot of information and background which seemed to move a little slower for me personally. However, after a few chapters I was fully immersed in the story and constantly pondering what would happen next with these beloved characters. No spoilers here, but the last chapter left me on the edge of my seat and eagerly anticipating a sequel!
Recommendation: If you liked the movies “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Ocean’s Eleven” than this book might be exactly what you need. It features an epic heist while introducing a host of spunky and endearing characters!
