About this listen

When his estranged son is kidnapped, Blaine McCracken goes to work for a group of Arab militants to recover the child he never knew Since he first went behind enemy lines in Vietnam, Blaine McCracken has faced death on every continent. In the line of fire he is an iron man, but now he faces a different challenge: fatherhood.

His son, Matt, is 13 - the unknown product of a long ago tryst. When the boy’s mother dies, McCracken goes to England to meet him. He finds a son cut in his father’s mold: a young athlete determined to put his body at risk to serve his country. But before Blaine can explain their relationship, Matt is snatched away, kidnapped by a band of Arab nationals intent on using McCracken’s strength to serve their own cause. The target? An Israeli weapon that they claim threatens the entire Arab world. To recover his son, McCracken must bring the Middle East back from the brink of war.

It gets off to a good start, a well crafted storyline and narrated with a sense of intrigue and suspense. That's where the good news ends and the plot deteriorates into a slack progression of ill-fitting scenes that defy credibility even at the fictional level.
To compound the disappointment, the author found it necessary to introduce a series of two-dimensional, moribund stereotypes better suited to a children's comic book or a superhero film. What did we lack beyond Amazon women with wicked intent; American Indians with inherited philosophy degrees; stoic Japanese Samurai determined to die with honour; cunning Mossad operatives; a secretive, attractive female spy with a dark past and, to top it all, a Bond style villain with a dastardly plan to rule the world and the chameleon-like capacity to look exactly like another military despot caricature?
I laboured to the end and greeted the final paragraph with a big yawn.

A loose-fitting plot
