About this listen

Winner of the Guild of Food Writers Award for Food Book of the Year 2020

A month by month handbook for foraging in the woods, fields and seashores of Great Britain.

Look out of your window, walk down a country path or go to the beach in Great Britain and you are sure to see many wild species that you can take home and eat. From dandelions in spring to sloe berries in autumn, via wild garlic, samphire, chanterelles and even grasshoppers, our countryside is full of edible delights in any season.

John Wright is the country's foremost expert in foraging and brings decades of experience, including as forager at the River Cottage, to this seasonal guide. Month by month, he shows us what species can be found and where, how to identify them and how to store, use and cook them. You'll learn the stories behind the Latin names, the best way to tap a Birch tree, and how to fry an ant, make rosehip syrup and cook a hop omelette.

With tips on kit, conservation advice and what to avoid, this is an indispensable guide for everyone interested in wild food, whether you want to explore the great outdoors or are happiest foraging from your armchair.

Critic reviews

"He writes so engagingly that it's hard to imagine that actual foraging can be more attractive.... This book is a treasure.” (John Carey, The Sunday Times)

Enjoyable presentation but with socialist tendancy. Learnt that a tree in my garden I had for 4 years been trying to identify was in fact a Cherry Plum. As an audiobook it struggled due to speed of delivery to really make sure on how to identify species, I guess I will have to buy the paperback so I can actually see what I am looking at. Overall a very informative way of presenting an interesting subject albeit with the caveats mentioned.

a great book and quite amusing. I would recommend having a hard copy or a field guide to help identify the plants.

From start to finish this was fantastic. John is so knowledgable and puts so much detail into every possible thing to forage, even things such as what to use them for and how tasty they are. The narration is so calming that I've not only listened to this whilst wig making but also whilst I drift off to sleep which has been incredibly relaxing. After a sleep through I also rewind it the 30 minute sleep timer so I catch up on anything I missed whilst dozing. Me and my partner only started foraging in Spring of this year and books like these are both incredibly helpful and full of interesting information but also such a nice bonding experience for us both as weve recounted John's stories that also go alongside some of the things that have been foraged. Living in Dorset myself it was wonderful to also hear about areas I knew. I only hope that I could maybe be part of one of John's foraging walks so I can learn even more ❤
