About this listen

The Fair Fight is a pulsating historical novel set within the world of female pugilists and their patrons in late 18th-century Bristol. It's an un-pauseable story which takes you from a filthy brothel to the finest houses in the town, from the world of street fighters to another of champions. It is about fighting your way to the top - and not only with your fists. Alive with the smells and sounds of the street, The Fair Fight is a major debut with incredibly wide appeal.

a great, well told story with multiple narrators and lots of exciting action. I couldn't wait to come back to this every time I had a chance. The characters are interesting and unusual, the historical setting convincing and there is so much going on. I just loved it.

Beautifully read and gripped me all the way

Enjoyable picaresque that thoroughly entertained for the full running time. Well worth the credit and the listening hours!

I loved the stories of Ruth and Charlotte, especially Ruth. The first chapter with her in the Convent was incredibly engaging. Charlotte's story took longer to develop for me, it was only around half way through that I started to get interested in how her character and story would develop. However I was completely uninterested in George's character and story. I felt the women were the focus and George was a bit of an oddity. I'm sad to say he bored me and I wanted to skip past his narratives to get back to the women. The writing was good and perhaps I missed some finer points. The ending was well worth the wait though, every character ends up exactly where they deserve to be which is very satisfying. Give it a go.
