About this listen

You’ve got everything she wants....

Newly married Natasha has the perfect house, a loving husband, and a beautiful little girl called Emily. She’d have it all if it wasn’t for Jen, her husband’s ex-wife who just won’t leave them alone....

Then Natasha returns home one day to find her husband and Emily gone without trace. Desperate to get her daughter back, Natasha will do anything even if it means accepting an offer of help from Jen. But can she trust her? And do either of them really know the man they married?

If you loved The Girl on the Train, Gone Girl or The Couple Next Door, then this dark, twisting psychological thriller from Amazon best-seller Jess Ryder is guaranteed to grip you.

"This is, without a doubt, one of the best psychological thrillers I have read this year.... OMG this book is so darn good!.... I kept telling myself, 'Just one more chapter', then before I knew it, I had devoured it in one day! If you are looking for a fast-paced engaging read, this is the book for you! I highly recommend giving it a whopping 5 stars." (Sistas with Books Book Club, 5 stars)

Although little slow get into and lots of back and forth, stick with it, once few chapters deep it just gets better and better!

Some good twists!

I was really disappointed with this book. I'll be more discerning in future when I browse the books in my 'because you read' list. The narrator does nothing to make you connect with the main character, it was a whiney listen. The book didn't get going until chapter 17 or 18 at which point I decided to persevere only because I had paid for the listen. The whole thing was slow. I can't see why others have awarded a 5* listen at all.

not gripping nor psychological

Many reviewers did not like the narration, but it was OK for me: clear, distinct and emotional enough to convey the story. The plot was worse, however, with too many accidental meetings. The few characters kept accidentally bumping into each other although the action took place in different locations, which seemed not too realistic.
The rather big "Now" part in the first part of the book contributed nothing to the main story line, and consisted mostly of describing the everyday routine: going to work, having a lunch, meeting a colleague... all for the sake of a "twist" which also did not actually change the story much.
All of the main characters did not seem very likable and lacked common sense and behaved unreasonably.
Spoiler alert! I'm sure there were sensible legal ways of solving the missing child situation. Also, in the ending it is not clear how the situation was sorted out from the legal point of view.

Not bad, but lacked common sense

I love reading and normally get through several books a week but I have to say I struggled with the first ten chapters of this book. The narrator sounded about 12 years old which I found quite annoying and her later attempt at male accents was awful- in their faux Northern accents both Sam and Chris sounded like the same person, which was both confusing as well as irritating.

The story was slow and dragged on with not much to grip the reader and by the time I got to the fifth chapter I was ready to throw the towel in! I persevered and then around chapter ten it finally started to get more interesting.

The storyline then started to move at pace and the constant twists and turns became better as the story progressed. However the ending felt flat and unfortunately I did not find Natasha endearing or even very likeable. Her naivety stretched the boundaries of credulity and I felt far more of a connection to Jen the ex wife.

Overall I would rate this book around 3.5

Maybe when I read a book (rather than listen to an audible) I find it more believable as I conjure up the world that the author has created inmy own mind, without being distracted by details like a female narrator trying to pull off a dodgy Northern male accent!

I’m sure most people will enjoy this book to a degree and it wouldn’t put me off trying another book by Jess Ryder but it’s certainly not one of the best thrillers out there.

Slow to start then hurtles along like a locomotive
