About this listen

Exclusively from Audible

Who owns the Eustace Diamonds? Lizzie Eustace claims that Sir Florian Eustace, her late husband, gave them to her. But Mr. Camperdown, the family solicitor, insists that they are an heirloom, to be passed down from generation to generation. Lizzie is both beautiful and clever, yet Mr. Camperdown believes her to be a scheming liar. And Mr. Camperdown is right! The battle for the diamonds rages until a robbery intervenes and they disappear. Or do they...? Will the scheming and manipulative Lizzie ever get what she deserves?

The third and least political in Trollope's six-volume Palliser series, this audiobook features a most remarkable heroine. Humorously cynical, Trollope shows his insight into human nature, painting each character's flaws. But how will their flaws determine their fate?

Anthony Trollope was one of the most popular and prolific novelists of the 19th century and his work is considered some of the greatest fiction of the era.

You can't help liking the central character in her schemes to keep a family heirloom and to find a husband, even though she causes all sorts of trouble with her selfishness and stubbornness. Highlights very strongly the 19th century need to marry for money (for men and women). Superbly read by Timothy West as usual. Very long, but thoroughly enjoyable. Warning: contains a bit of Victorian anti-semitism , so be aware if that would offend you.

Wicked Lizzie Eustace!

The best possible reader reading an all-time favourite author. Timothy West really is Trollope for me now - he truly loves and embodies the characters as he portrays them.

Timothy West and Trollope - Perfection!

Trollope is a writer that I return to again and again, he bares repetition! As a registered blind man I rely greatly upon these Audible books, but the most important consideration in them all is the choice of narrator and for these stories Timothy West stands out unequalled in reading these stories (I have heard a few!) His reading suggests a knowledge of the story and how to impart each characters intentions as subtly as I believe Trollope himself could have desired. A brilliant performance of a story dealing not only with the hypocrisy of society but also underscoring how that hypocrisy was tolerated and sustained by its individual members.

Enchanting

Rather a long winded story but an interesting picture of the times with resonances of today's political issues. Brilliant performance.

A very enjoyable story about a very wicked young lady. Trollope is the opposite of Dickens when it comes to his heroines; where the former seems to admire passive, delicate, well behaved women, Trollope’s novels are full of opinionated, feisty females who live life on their own terms. Lizzie Greystock is certainly one of these.

Very enjoyable, recommended.

What a naughty girl!
