Summary

Renowned Israeli historian Ilan Pappe's groundbreaking book revisits the formation of the State of Israel. Between 1947 and 1949, over 400 Palestinian villages were deliberately destroyed, civilians were massacred, and around a million men, women, and children were expelled from their homes at gunpoint.

Denied for almost six decades, had it happened today it could only have been called "ethnic cleansing." Decisively debunking the myth that the Palestinian population left of their own accord in the course of this war, Ilan Pappe offers impressive archival evidence to demonstrate that, from its very inception, a central plank in Israel's founding ideology was the forcible removal of the indigenous population. This is an indispensable book for anyone interested in the current crisis in the Middle East.

A very emotional read.

After reading the book, I found
that it was very painful to accept the conclusion. How the state of Israel could commit such actions reminiscent of the actions meted out on the European Jews less than 5 years previously. A whole jndigenous population was virtually uprooted from their Homeland and forced into camps that are still their homes after over 70 years. The World looked on and did nothing. The UN passed resolutions against Israel that were not carried through. Israel is not very nice!

A real history lesson

This was an excellent book bringing to light the real historical facts. A real eye opener compared to the whitewashed information we are fed from the media & governments. Everyone should be made aware of these facts. It would definitely change the world's perception of the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Essential reading

Very well distilled, accessible and powerful account of a very complex issue. It serves as a good entry point into the history of this conflict. A harrowing (but important) narrative.

History repeats again and again

I appreciate the way every sentence is documented, references to archives, names, locations and really detailed information on numbers and facts. It has helped me to have a factual perspective of the current situation. No opinions added, only the display of documented facts.
