Less shock value, more complex

An excellent sequel that fully realises the potential of The Poppy War. Can't for the final book!

Absolutely Incredible

The second book in the Poppy War series has more than lived up to the first. Such an incredible story and such a roller-coaster! Impossible to put down from start to finish. Once again Emily Woo Zeller did a flawless job of bringing this epic story to life, every character was diverse and engaging. Her stunning performance makes you feel every characters emotion right along with them. Absolutely incredible, a must have for any fantasy fan.

incredible narrator

I feel very mixed about the content, but the narrator is absolutely amazing. She had an incredible range of voices and it felt like if every speech tag was removed I still would have never been confused. unfortunately the content of the book is much more mixed. If you enjoyed the Poppy War in its entirety then you will likely love this book. I found that a lot of the character defining moments in the first book made for weak development in the second book. I don't really like it but on a more positive note there are so many things that are wonderful in the series. I just don't like the direction and it's frustrating. The world and many of the characters are excellent. The battles are described amazingly. I just feel that character inconsistency really hurts this book especially from the main character

Average

Not as good as the first book in content or writing. I read the first book and found and audio conversion odd, too many 'he says'. 'she said' If the narrator is going to the effort to create personas for the characters it made this feel redundant. I think this book would be more effective read. However repeat concepts and a mender ending tirade of self doubt, loathing and misery just got tedious after a while.

Pathetic main character

The descriptions were good, the combat strategies and overall plot was interesting enough, and the premise was great. Just the characters in this really let it down.  "She'd been stupidly, passively asleep, for such a long time." 19 hours in and the main character just noticing how pathetically she's been written.  Pretty much sums up the main character for the entirety of the book. If you like books were the main character just floats along with whatever is happening in the story, feeling sorry for themselves most of the time and only when surrounding characters force them, do they become an active participant in their own story, then this is a book for you. Honestly, I felt incredibly frustrated throughout this book, some parts were incredible and made me want to keep going in the hopes it'd keep on this trend, but it didn't. I think because there are those few amazing moments threaded throughout ,the contrast makes it feel a lot worse than it probably is. But this book really wasn't for me.  If you enjoyed the first book then great go for it you'll probably really enjoy this. If you had mixed feelings about the first, specifically the last half/quarter in particular then I wouldn't recommend.

Staggeringly good fantasy

If R.F.K keeps this up, The Poppy War series will easily become one of the best fantasy series ever written. Seriously powerful storytelling. A definite must.

Better than The Poppy War

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Whilst i enjoyed the poppy war i found it to be a little disjointed and unfocused. The Dragon Republic rectified these issues for me as the story flowed better and was thematically tighter. I particularly enjoyed the way Rin's character developed in this book and the greater depth given to some of the other characters. The plot is great with some very interesting political machinations and character relationships. This is the best book of any genre that i"ve read in a long time and so much better than what the vast majority other fantasy authors have to offer. Very highly recommended.

excellent second book.

Now I am eager for the third book. if it's half as good as the book 2, then this Saga will be memorable.
