About this listen

In The Doors Unhinged, New York Times bestselling author and legendary Doors drummer John Densmore offers a powerful exploration of the 'greed gene' - that part of the human psyche that propels us toward the accumulation of more and more wealth, even at the expense of our principles, friendships and the well-being of society. This is the gripping account of the legal battle to control The Doors's artistic destiny. In it, Densmore looks at the conflict between his bandmates and him as they fought over the right to use The Doors's name, revealing the ways in which this struggle mirrored and reflected a much larger societal issue: that no amount of money seems to be enough for even the wealthiest people.

The Doors continue to attract new generations of fans, with more than one hundred million albums sold worldwide and counting, and nearly twenty million followers on the band's social media accounts. As such, Densmore occupies a rarefied space in popular culture. He is beloved by artists across the decades for his fierce, uncompromising dedication to art. His writing consistently earns accolades and has appeared in a range of publications such as the Los Angeles Times and Rolling Stone. As his friend and American novelist Tom Robbins recently advised him, 'If you keep writing like this, I'll have to get a drum set.'

thank you John. I was there, you were missed.

It's great hearing John's voice and a story straight from his mouth.

This is a very in-depth story of gumption and greed. It’s remarkable to learn the ins and outs of a huge courtroom trial such as this. It’s also incredible to think that people regard themselves in such bizarre ways, in a very sad way.

John Densmore recalls things so thoroughly, it’s kind of baffling at times to comprehend. The only thing that’s negative about his brilliant story telling is his accents, haha.

A Fascinating Read

John Densmore is the brilliant drummer of The Doors that still holds his friendship & loyalty to Jim Morrison even after all these years since Jim broke on through to the other side. When The Doors started out on their journey in the garage of Ray Manzareks parents, they could only dream of the success they would go onto have. They believed in the songs they wrote & music that they all played & believed in each other & the strong brotherly bound they all had. To make life easier Jim Morrison said that she all have an equal share in the band & also the veto in case any thing got funny down the line. You will see on all The Doors records that all songs are written by The Doors and no singular person. Jim must have had a vision on the future that something would go wrong between them all, hence the each band member could veto anything to do with the music or the name The Doors. Who would have believed that after many years after Jim's passing that John Densmore would find himself in a court battle with Ray & Robbie over how the name The Doors should be used. John showed his loyalty to the pact & the contract that all 4 members of The Doors signed all those years ago to go to court to fight what was right & what they all agreed upon. John had to fight hard for this & he and his family & friends went through so much pain to do the right thing. You will never hear The Doors songs selling cars, cigarettes or anything else & that is down to John. The music is all the better for not being used for commercialisation as it was listened to by soldiers in Vietnam war, people loosing their virginity, or just having fun back in the days when you could. The music has never got old & just keeps growing and getting better as The Doors get more new fans with each passing year. I personally would like to thank John Densmore for fighting for this & staying loyal to all what The Door's stood for at a time when it was not easy for him & his family, after all The Doors made such great music & wrote life defining songs. Everyone should have a friendship that is true like John Densmore, but sadly that is so rare. The book is a great read or an even better listen with John doing the narration himself. Buy the book it is enjoyable and insight into one of the biggest music court cases their has ever been. In the end justice was done thanks to John, The Morrison family & Courson family who were Jims in-laws...

The True Friendship & Loyalty of John Densmore.
