About this listen

***The first in a series from America's Greatest Living Thriller Writer.***

Military cop Scott Brodie is the guy you send in when the other guys can't solve a case. Now he's on the hunt for a dangerous ex-Delta Force deserter named Kyle Mercer, and may have met his match.

When Delta Force Captain Kyle Mercer disappeared from his post in Afghanistan, a video released by his Taliban captors made international headlines. But circumstances were murky: Did Mercer desert before he was captured? Then a second video sent to Mercer's Army commanders leaves no doubt: the trained assassin and keeper of classified Army intelligence has willfully disappeared.

When Mercer is spotted a year later in Caracas, Venezuela, top military brass task Scott Brodie and Maggie Taylor of the Criminal Investigation Division to fly to Venezuela and bring Mercer back to America-dead or alive. Brodie knows this is a difficult mission, made more difficult by his new partner's inexperience and by his suspicion that Maggie Taylor is reporting to the CIA.

Tense, exotic and inspired by a real-life story, this thriller from number one New York Times bestseller Nelson DeMille and his son, screenwriter Alex DeMille is an absolute must listen.

'The Deserter is rich with Nelson DeMille's customary dry humor, clever banter and sardonic commentary. Nelson DeMille and his son Alex have written a fast-paced, suspenseful and interesting thriller.' (Washington Times)

'With ripped-from-the-headlines appeal, an exotic and dangerous locale, and the hairpin twists and inimitable humor that are signature DeMille, The Deserter is the first in a timely and thrilling new series' (The Real Book Spy)

I’ve read all of Nelson’s books (bar short stories) and he is my all time favourite author, and I was sad to hear of his passing.
Scott Brick is also my favourite narrator and no matter what he reads, he interprets the pages well and delivers them flawlessly.
This was his first book that I have listened to rather than read and for the first hour or so I struggled a little. I wasn’t sure if this was because it was a Demille book being read to me, but after a while I came to realise that I think it was possibly Alex’s influence coming through. I cannot know this for sure as I don’t know how much collaboration went on and how it worked. All I know is that the first quarter of this book didn’t feel up to Nelson’s usual standard.
As the book went on I either became used to any nuances I was picking up on, or the flow between the two authors improved.
That being said, I’ve given the book 5 stars as it is deserved and I will withhold full judgement of Alex’s writing until I read a solo book by him.
Great story, great characters, amazing Nelson Demille style coming through in the end. Oh, and great work Mr Brick.
