About this listen

The truth has no place in a courtroom. The truth doesn't matter in a trial.

The only thing that matters is what the prosecution can prove.

Eddie Flynn used to be a con artist. Then he became a lawyer. Turned out the two weren't that different. It's been more than a year since Eddie vowed never to set foot in a courtroom again. But now he doesn't have a choice. Olek Volchek, the infamous head of the Russian mafia in New York, has strapped a bomb to Eddie's back and kidnapped his ten-year-old daughter, Amy. Eddie has only 48 hours to defend Volchek in an impossible murder trial - and win - if he wants to save his daughter. Under the scrutiny of the media and the FBI, Eddie must use his razor-sharp wit and every con-artist trick in the book to defend his "client" and ensure Amy's safety. With the timer on his back ticking away, can Eddie convince the jury of the impossible?

Lose this case, and he loses everything.

I have listened to a great deal of crime fiction, this one of the best I've heard. The Defence is thoroughly gripping and excellently paced. I'm pretty good at seeing where these types of books are headed but this one had me at nearly every turn. The one thing I did connect early may even have been skillfully planted to give the listener a deeper feeling of engagement with the story.

If you like legal thrillers this one is a doozy!

This is the first book I have listened to focusing more on the judicial side of a crime and I found it an interesting change from the detective stories I am more often drawn to. The protagonist, Eddie Flynn, is thrown into an impossible position in which he must defend and deceive the head of the Russian Mafia in order to save his daughter.

The plot is full of ups and downs with every chapter revealing a new strand of the complex web built around the characters. The book also gave some interesting insights into the US legal system and into the techniques used by lawyers and fraudsters (although it is clear that these were often embellished, occasionally to a ridiculous extent). Another thing I found interesting was the way in which innocent character's were so oblivious to what was actually going on and how their most innocent actions often had such a devastating effect on Flynn.

Initially i found the voice of the main character a little annoying, perhaps because I am not used to hearing an American accent, however as I progressed through the book I found that i no longer noticed this. The narration of the rest of the characters was great, each was distinct and memorable.

All in all this was a great book and i would highly recommend it to anyone.

A well paced and insightful thriller

Loved this book. I’d read Thirteen before this one has to go back to the start.
What a thriller both were.
Already bought the next book in the series.

This book was the second book I listen to in the series I got book two in a two for one offer and liked it so I thought I would listen to the first book in the series. I was not disappointed it keeps you intrigued all away through so many twists to the plot. You will not be disappointed
