About this listen

Sam McCready is The Deceiver, one of the Secret Intelligence Service's most unorthodox and most valued operatives, a legend in his own time. The end of the cold war has, however, strengthened the hand of the Whitehall mandarins, to whom he seems about as controllable as Genghis Khan, so Sam is to have his fate decided at a special hearing.

As part of the proceedings, four of Sam's key operations are reviewed: a clandestine mission into East Germany in 1985 to contact the top Russian spy General Pankratin; a KGB colonel who wants to defect; an audacious Qaddafi-inspired plot to ship arms to the IRA; and the occasion when McCready presided over the aftermath of political murder and mayhem in the Caribbean.

Frederick Forsyth novels never disappoint.
This book, however, is in a class of its own. I couldn’t wait to hear the next chapter and yet I was disappointed when it ended, because I wanted more.
Even though I worked out the penultimate twist, it was fascinating how it evolved.
For a reader/listener I think FF is a national treasure. And his autobiography goes some way to explain why he can pull off these complex plots with ease.

FF - a real stunner

I am an avid Frederick Forsyth fan and decided to try the audiobooks. The narrator Christian Rodska truly brings this brilliant author's books to life.

Fantastic!

Somehow so much of the story feels very close to the truth and scary world of international mess that evil people create. Credibility is what makes it compelling.

Forsyth at his best, Rodska too
