About this listen

A hugely enjoyable, must-listen murder mystery sure to appeal to fans of Elly Griffiths, Anthony Horowitz, and Agatha Christie, with one of the best and most satisfying conclusions you'll ever hear. A classic in Japan, available in English for the first time.

A belter of a premise for a good who done it but the narrator and accent ruined the flow of the story

Good story poorly told

It took me a few times to visualise names to imagined faces. frankly, due to my lack of familiarity with Japanese language. Once I could see the characters in my head, the book swept me away. I loved everything about it, the timelines, the different current locations, the classic references to Agatha Christie etc. This is in the style of 'fair play' mystery, eg the. lies are there, it can be solved, if you see them and stop assuming. I didn't guess the ending, but that just made me want to relisten and buy hard copies of other Japanese classic books. loved this.. it opened now doors for me.

exceptional classic locked room mystery

This was an enjoyable tribute to the Queen of Crime and was a satisfying amble through the clues with a rewarding finish.
The narration was horrible. The American accent didn’t seem fitting for a distinctly Japanese novel but more than the the voice actor’s voice sounded like AI. His tone on top of some very strange pronunciation was very off-putting.
I would read other books by this author, but I certainly wouldn’t choose to listen to the narrator again.

A good tribute

This was a fun free listen and brought to mind And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. The author sounded very robotic but perhaps this was a production issue. It didn't detract from the story and the simple yet predictable outcome (no spoilers) and I finished it in two days. Good fun. There's better out there but this is worth a listen

A simple yet enjoyable murder mystery

I enjoyed the story which is well paced and presented for a lover of golden age detective stories.

The narrator is quite good BUT the accent is distinctly American, which seems to be quite common in readers of translations from Japanese books, it passes but is, initially incongruous.

Good twist on a classic
