Summary

“I loved The Death House. It's moving and totally involving. Pinborough writes with vividness and emotional resonance. I couldn't put it down." (Stephen King)

This is an exceptional, contemporary, heart-breaking novel.

Toby's life was perfectly normal--until it was unravelled by something as simple as a blood test.

Taken from his family, Toby now lives in the Death House: an out-of-time existence far from the modern world, where he and the others who live there are studied by Matron and her team of nurses. They're looking for any sign of sickness. Any sign of their wards changing. Any sign that it's time to take them to the sanatorium.

No one returns from the sanatorium.

Withdrawn from his housemates and living in his memories of the past, Toby spends his days fighting his fear. But then a new arrival in the house shatters the fragile peace, and everything changes. Because everybody dies. It's how you choose to live that counts.

Beautiful.

I read the book last year and loved it, so knew I'd enjoy the audiobook, but Ben Elliott brings such life to the characters that I was an emotional wreck by the end. Think The Fault in our Stars mixed with Shawshank Redemption and you might get somewhere close. Bring tissues.

A beautiful book

A beautiful story, more a semi dystopian novel rather than horror or sci fi or whatever else it has been marketed as. NOT a silly love story though, it's one with depth and substance and a real founding story. I enjoyed it, despite it not being what I originally thought. Fabulous narration!!

lovely story with well developed characters

really liked the story, characters were likeable and we'll developed. Some reviewers have spoken of a twist, and while I thought the story was lovely I can't say there was a twist ( I guessed half way through what would happen) or that I was surprised by what happened.

The narration was good, he really made the characters come alive. Not sure who my favourite character was, they all had their plus points and unlike other books none of them got on my nerves.

Intriguing story, different

This isn't her best piece but it's worth a listen. So many books can blur together for me, but this one is memorable!

Brilliant book!

The title of my review, says it all. Brilliant book, couldn't stop listening, and saddened when it ended. Brilliant work by Sarah, and narrated perfectly! Highly recommend.

Marvelously brilliant listen!

What made the experience of listening to The Death House the most enjoyable?

The whole book was marvelously different to what I was expecting

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Death House?

Not going give a spoiler-but the end ,sad but sweet...

What about Ben Elliot’s performance did you like?

Everything about his performance was first class...another reader to watch out for.

Any additional comments?

This book was so addictive I listened to it in one sitting, staying up until way after midnight. It was totally different to what I was expecting,I was expecting a thriller-what I got was a very emotional, thought provoking drama, centered around a group of children who had been separated from their families due to an unnamed illness, which labelled them as defectives...
My one complaint about the story is we do not learn anything about the mysterious illness, what is it?..why does it only affect children etc?I will say that it is an emotional book,it will make you laugh and cry and make you a little scared for the characters. But it is also intriguing and mysterious. You will start listening and will not want to stop,so allow yourself 8-9 hours of having nothing else to do.(I started in the afternoon and finished in bed very late).
This book is so well written ,captivating and amazing. You get enchanted with it and surprisingly never depressed by the despair and the darkness, because it is also a sweet romance, between two teens who have been robbed of a future. The end also totally different to what you may expect.
No words can be enough to recommend this book-just buy it.You will not regret it.I didn't-and I am extremely picky about what I read and listen to.
