Summary

An alien fugitive carrying a secret. A mob of relentless assassins sent to stop her. A million-year-old ship from a dead civilization.

Captain James Hanson of the Solar Alliance Vessel Dauntless knows he has to help. But soon he finds the conspiracy goes deeper than he ever imagined. Hunted down by his own government, he scrapes together a ragtag team and goes hunting for the truth.

He's hounded on every side - from the authorities, from alien warriors, from mysterious, faceless soldiers. From the criminal backwaters of the galaxy to idyllic colonies hiding dark pasts, he uncovers a threat to the entire galaxy. A damaged, renegade ship and its unlikely crew of fugitives, mercenaries, and principled officers is all that stands between mankind and its destruction.

Great Start

This looks to be a great start to what promises to be an excellent trilogy. Action is fast paced with a good mix of characters.

It always helps to have a good narrator, and Mark Boyett never disappoints.

Good story concept, but..

I enjoyed the story, but felt that the development was cumbersome in many places, like painting yourself in a corner, then punching a hole in the wall to escape! 😉

Mark Boyett saves the day

The good:
Mark Boyett- saves a mediocre book. He is always a pleasure to listen to.

The bad:
This book is like Guardians of the Galaxy without the good parts. That’s a joke on many levels. This is a thin story. The only reason I finished it was because of Mark Boyett. I knew about an hour into this book it was going to for me. It feels like a graphic novel come to life.

Competent Space Opera

The War of the Ancients trilogy is a jack-of-all-trades. It doesn't do any one thing all that impressively, but it does everything decently. It didn't exactly grip me and refuse to let go but it was nice for a casual listen.

Mark Boyett is likewise fairly solid. Most characters are voiced well, with some small exceptions where he over-stresses his accents. (Sorry, Agatha sounds like Mrs. Doubtfire to me.)

Over all, it gets a solid B or B-. Which is just fine.

1st book of an enjoyable trilogy

I recommend all 3 books of this trilogy. Likeable characters going against incredible odds to save the galaxy.
