The entertaining, moving and unpredictable new thriller from multi-award-winning best seller Chris Brookmyre is a wholly original masterpiece.

A special effects make-up artist, her talent is to create realistic scenes of bloody violence.

Then, one day, she wakes to find her lover dead in her bed.

Twenty-five years later, her sentence for murder served, Millicent is ready to give up on her broken life - until she meets troubled film student and reluctant petty thief Jerry.

Together, they begin to discover that all was not what it seemed on that fateful night...and someone doesn't want them to find out why.

Chris Brookmyre was a journalist before becoming a full-time novelist with the publication of his award-winning debut Quite Ugly One Morning, which established him as one of Britain's leading crime novelists. His 2016 novel Black Widow won both the McIlvanney Prize and the Theakston Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year award. Brookmyre's novels novels have sold more than two million copies in the UK alone.

I am sure that mastering lots of regional accents must be challenging for a narrator but this book's reading stuttered very slightly for me by the narrator's attempts at both Italian characters speaking English and even basic use of Italian words such as "trattoria" and "gelateria" . I think that this is a common problem with books by Christopher Brookmyre as I suppose it must be difficult to find a narrator able to do "Scottish" as well as others. It was the opposite in "Not the End of the World " where the narrator was required to channel Mel Gibson and Billy Connoly to achieve Steph's voice.
With all that said it was an enjoyable listen and my criticism should be taken as constructive as I would certainly recommend this as an enjoyable listen.

Good listen with slight reservations.

Unlikely partnership between Glasgow bed with a heart and elderly ex con, chasing across Europe to prove her innocence and redeem himself. The disposing of a body scene in Partick is classic Brookmyre

Wonderful 2020 brookmyre

This is the best thing Brookmyre has done since he traded in his sense of humour for something altogether more virtue-signally.

It's a solid story with some fantastic heart-in-mouth moments, brutal twists, great character development and real heart.

The narration is absolutely first class in every respect, too.

An absolute stoater...

An object lesson in treating reviews with some caution. I almost didn't choose this as some of the reviews said that the narration was bad, and that can be the case sometimes. Happily my positive track record with Mr Brookmyre won the day. A great story with engaging characters. The growing relationship between the main characters was handled with patience and a light touch and was totally believable. And I really enjoyed the narrator. I knew which character was talking at all times and I felt that she captured the various accents and personalities convincingly. Finding little things to criticise is the easiest job in the world and the meanest. I am sorry that the story ended - I was having such fun ( though life did go on hold for a bit ).
So for me this is a top 10 listen. Great story, multi-layered, very well told.

A lovely surprise.

Even after reading some of the not so great reviews about narration and accents, the storyline still grabbed my attention. And neither the author or narrator disappointed!!

I really enjoyed The Cut from beginning to end. I’m not Scottish or British or Italian, so the accents really didn’t bother me. What did stand out to me was the narrator who was picked to read this book had a talent for creating distinction between each character, and keeping a great pace and clearness when reading! That’s what makes easy, concise and enjoyable listening!

I loved the story!!! The balance between storyline, and character background and the friendships between the characters was spot on. Maybe a little coincidental.... but really it’s a novel, a story, something to get lost in. Not a work of non-fiction.

I really enjoyed this book! And glad I found it.

Loved it!!!!
