About this listen

From the author of the Bargainer series comes the prequel to Bewitched. Two thousand years before there was Selene, there was Roxilana. Her love fated, her life doomed, and her story forgotten―until now.

When Roxilana hears a voice inside her head, she believes she's gone mad. This voice, Memnon, claims he is her god-touched soul mate, one who has the ability to wield magic. Not only that, but he believes Roxilana possesses magic too.

Wild though his claims are, Roxilana realizes Memnon speaks the truth. First, her power Awakens. Then, Memnon, King of the Sarmatians, shows up at her door in Rome, proclaims her as his wife, and takes her to his homeland.

Roxilana's fate is everything she hoped for. But there are things Memnon didn't tell her–about his magic, life as a Sarmatian, and what she, as queen, will have to endure. And as she soon learns, nothing is as dangerous as love and power. While the combination can build empires and legacies, it is capable of destroying everything and everyone in its path. And if Roxilana and Memnon are not careful, it could destroy them along with it.

It's nice to have the full story of Roxilana and Memnon. We did have a short resume from the first 2 books, but I can say I enjoyed this one as well, just maybe not as much. One of the reasons I'm, perhaps, not as excited about this book is the narration. Roxilana's pov maintains an almost constant whining tone, like she is on verge of crying, and for me this ruines her character. I understand this tone in some scenes, but not in 90-95% of the story. It would have been a better idea if I stuck with the physical book.

All in all it is a good series

I’ve loved everything I’ve read by Laura Thalassa (The Bargainer Series & The Four Horsemen) and have no idea why it took me so long to get round to this series - I’m glad I have now! I also haven’t read the main Bewitched series yet that this is a prequel to, but I loved Roxi and Menmon’s story so much that I’ve just bought those and will be diving in straight away,

Roxi is an orphan with only faint memories of her family, love and home before ending up in the the Roman Empire, you can feel the loss, loneliness and sorrow about her situation and then she hears Menmon in her head, when they’re younger as they get to know each other and become friends it’s so sweet and touching and in the early part of the book a lot of it is just their conversations, the way it’s written is quiet and simple, it felt like the rest of the world disappeared and made it so easy to get drawn in to them and their story, as the story progresses and their relationship grows - whats not to love! They’re both great characters, the love, devotion and certainty just swept me off my feet, it’s beautiful, emotional and heartbreaking, then throw in warriors, magic, found family, betrayal, and it was just amazing. the narrators did a brilliant job bringing the characters and story to life.

Beautiful & Heartbreaking,
