Summary

THE INTERNATIONAL SENSATION

It starts with just one body – tortured, mummified and then discarded.

Its discovery reveals a nightmare world of hidden lives. Of lost identities, secret rituals and brutal exploitation, where nobody can be trusted.

This is the darkest, most complex case the police have ever seen.

This is the world of the Crow Girl.

Critic reviews

Compelling... we are left gasping for breath
A compulsive page-turner... ridiculously entertaining
There's a fantastic twist... the pace of its revelations [is] relentless
Dark, powerful, disturbing
The best crime novel of the year so far
A breakneck journey through a plot of labyrinthine complexity... Sund boldly places dissociative identity disorder…at the heart of this extremely disturbing novel. (Joan Smith)
A dark and brutal read that addresses violence perpetuated by women. Snappy writing makes this a page-turning thriller
Creepy is elevated to an art form in this tale of dysfunctional characters, peppered with paedophilia, guilt, pain, powerlessness, denial and betrayal... The subject matter makes for harrowing reading at times, but skilfully escalating suspense keeps you hooked all the way
A pulse-pounding thriller that manages to linger on character depth and puts an emphasis on supporting characters that are usually given short shrift. With its heady mix of graphic violence, noirish thrills and social commentary, the book is a must-read for Scandinavian crime fiction enthusiasts….a huge book and a landmark achievement
Tipped to make a killing

I enjoyed this book, but there were a couple of negatives. I wondered several times whether it was ever going to end. It is very convoluted and there are so many characters that it is difficult to keep track of who everybody is - or isn't! Worth sticking with it, though if you re prepared to keep hitting the rewind button.

Good story, but not for the faint-hearted

Reminiscent of Val McDermid’s Tony Hill series (before the ‘Insidious Intent’ train wreck that is) but survivors of child sexual or physical abuse should proceed with caution.

Steady burn

I enjoyed listening to this book even though it's a grim story. The naration was very good but spoiled by terrible pronunciation of Swedish place names the whole way through. Absolutely no effort had been made to try to learn the correct pronunciation. Even Gothenburg was pronounced incorrectly and that's the English name for the city.

Good story, poor Swedish.

Simply too long. Very, very confusing in the first part of the book especially. Flicks backwards, forwards and sideways relentlessly and it’s very hard to keep up. I’ve read many, many long books and thoroughly enjoyed them and in fact never wanted them to end but this was hard work and I’m just not sure if it’s worth it. I just cannot work out if I’m satisfied or not and I would normally know. Would I recommend it? I can’t even answer that.

What a marathon

I tried, I really tried to finish this book. My biggest problem was that I just couldn’t relate to any of the characters, from the dull detective to the rather unbelievable baddies and victims, they constantly bored me.

I managed twenty two hours but when yet another introspective thought process was read by the narrator (one who constantly failed to lift the story above the mundane), I threw in the towel and moved on.

Cliff hangers there are none. It is monotonic and, well, not very well written. Every time I came back to it I thought ‘here we go again’ which is not the attitude I want when listening to a book.

It wasn’t nearly as explicit or gruesome as some reviews had led me to believe, but maybe that’s just me. Or maybe all those scenes happen after twenty two hours, I’ll never know, and don’t really care.

As you can probably gather I didn’t like this. I didn’t hate it, I was just disappointed that I spent twenty two hours trying hard, but failing, to become involved in what turned out to be something and nothing.

Overly long and rather tedious
